Yard sale trip

Yard Sale Trip

Stopped by a couple of yard sales this morning. As usual, looking for locks and safes. Most people don’t put those kinds of things on their yard sales, so I usually ask. “I have an unusual hobby, and find it does not hurt to ask… Do you have any old or unusual locks or safes, with or without keys or combinations?”

Most of the time, the answer is no. This morning, one of the other ‘shoppers’ said that he had a few locks if I want to see them. He took me a couple of doors down, and showed me this box.

Image

$10, he said.

Image

Sold! Nothing outstanding, but not bad for $10.

Looks like the ends of a bicycle lock, but this one has a door chain connection. Did not take long to figure out the combination.

Image

Tiny warded suitcase lock. Meh.

Image

Small warded Master lock

Image

Two combination locks. Looked up the combo for the one on the right. On the left, the serial number was out of range of my books… by less than 500 numbers. Took five minutes to figure that one out. (Thanks for posting the technique, Oldfast!)

Image

Two identical Eagle pin tumbler padlocks. The right one has a fair bit of corrosion, but both work fine.

Image

They still had the 3-D Eagle on the keys.

Eagle wafer padlock

Fort heavy padlock

With Tubular keys

Two identical HURD marine locks, except that one has a longer shackle. (You can figure out which one is which.)

Image

Not exactly complicated warding.

It never hurts to ask indeed!

I think there are collectors and hobbyist for just about anything. It is odd, that no matter how odd one's interests are, other people's interests may seem weird.

Picked? What, do you mean like lockpicking? How does that work?

Great find, Gordon. To me, these locks are pretty exotic. I have very few US-made locks in my collection. That is about to change soon though :)

What a great find! Most of them seems to be "vintage" (description used on ebay a lot). I wonder if the previous owner was a collector/lock picker

Beancurd - it would appear to be from a collector, but they looked to be unpicked.

Interesting that the Fort heavy padlock
does not have the little "nib" cut-out
like most tubular locks.

How many cuts in that tubular blank, 8 ?

That's a really cool find, especially for $10!

You could probably sell the box on ebay to a tea box collector for $50! ;)
