Trouble with a Southord Tubular Pick

Postby Divinorum » 19 Dec 2013 20:31

Greetings everyone! Finally got around to making my first post. I have a question about using the Southord Tubular Pick. First I just want to quickly share (Skip to the question below if you like). I've been lurking behind the scenes for a little while now absorbing as much information as possible from all you knowledgeable folks. I became interested in locks out of simple curiosity and it has turned into a real hobby and I'm loving every bit of it. I began with a starter pick set and cut away locks from sparrows and have since acquired a small collection, including one tough Medeco I still haven't opened.

OK onto the good stuff. After learning about and playing with many pin and tumblers I picked up a 7 pin tubular pick from Southord to change things up a bit. I read all the directions, watched many videos, and have been practicing a while now. I only have one 7 pin tubular lock to practice on so I'm not sure if its user error or just a difficult lock to open. I know these picks won't work on every tubular lock out there. From what I've learned these picks work by making an impression of the key pins to create a makeshift key. I have the key to the lock. By measuring the cuts on the key and setting the pick the same way the lock opens flawlessly. I'm struggling When I use the pick as if I didn't have the key. I set the pick pins flush, push the pick into the lock enough for the pins to make that impression on the pick, then let a little pressure off and turn back and forth. No dice. I noticed after doing this that the impression is very off on 3 of the pick pins. All the other pins impression correctly. One of the key cuts is a 5 and the pick impressions a 1. Another 2 key cuts are 3 and impression as a 5. If i manually correct these three pins it will then open. No mater how many times I try to pick it those pick pins are always off by far and no matter how much wiggling is done the lock is not going to open. Am I doing something wrong or could this lock possibly have different security springs or pins that are throwing off the pick? Any advice of things I should do different?
I realize this isn't the advanced section and some tubular locks are only discussed there. Without breaking any rules can anyone shed some light? Here is a picture of the lock (sorry about the quality, it's the best I could do). Thank you very much! :)

Sounds like the adjustable collar is not tight enough, try tightening it just a little bit and try again untill it works properly.
It turns to tighten and loosen

Have you tried lubricating the lock?

It is your technique. Instead of the current method you are using you should set the pick feelers flush, push the pick straight into the lock with no turning force applied while fully inserting the pick. Then you lift the pick very slightly, apply turning force, then push the pick straight back down while applying the turning force. Release turning force and repeat this until the lock opens. Remember to lift only slightly each time as you need to catch the shear line at each pin. If you lift the pick out too far you can miss the shear line on the binding pin. If you rock the pick you will also mess up the impressioning process.

I have tried many different settings on the tension collar with no luck.

No not yet. The lock is not worn and is in great condition. If I were to try lubrication, what products do you prefer?

I will work to perfect this technique. I took some more pictures to actually compare the key vs the pick. Maybe they will point out my mistakes. This is the key. I labeled the problem cuts that are not impressioning correctly 1,2,3 for reference.

When I insert the pick into the lock and follow your instructions, this is how the pick looks for those three pins. 1 Does not go down far enough and 2 goes down to far. I think three looks correct now though. Thanks everyone for the replies and advice. Any other words of wisdom are greatly appreciate. Hopefully the pictures help a bit.

You may have to lubricate the tool or even put some flitz polish on the feelers and push-pull them a few times, mine had a few feelers that felt gritty and needed some deburring/polishing before it worked right.
Don't use W-D on it though or any petrolium products like oil, it will eventually destroy the rubber rings.
