Best Kwikset Knob Cylinder Removal Tool

Postby MrWizard » 2 Dec 2012 4:27

Ever have a hard time removing a cylinder from a Kwikset Knobset with a standard Kwikset tool? You end up using 2 small screw drivers to pop out the tough to remove cylinder. Some people over pry on the spring retainers and this bends them. Then they tend to over bend them back to fix them making it hard to remove the cylinder the next time it needs to be serviced. The best tool I have ever used will remove the toughest of cylinders with ease. You can buy one or make your own out of a 5/16 diameter screw driver or round rod and attach a handle to it.

You will want to cut the slot down the middle 2 inches before you start to taper the end to a cone shape then carefully bend the 2 sides outward as seen in the picture below.

The flat sides you see help keep the tool aligned correctly and also helps stop the tool from going through too far after the cylinder pops out preventing jamming the tool through your hand. :D

The handle has a nice master pin dumping follower on it although I don't like using them for various reasons.

This tool makes removing Kwikset cylinders a snap. It comes out so easy you will not want to ever use a regular Kwikset tool again after trying one of these.

Measurements are not critical but good to stay close as you can to them then test the tool and if adjustments need to be made then do so.

You can buy one of these online or make one yourself. Much cheaper to make one yourself but it is much easier to just buy one already made. You decide what is best for you.

The Aero Removal tool which works a bit differently, but has some large improvements over the flimsy original Kwikset removal tool.

I like the Aero Removal tool as well.
It removes Kwikset KIK cylinders easier then the original Kwikset tool.

It is easier to remove "C" and "E" clips as well.

The only thing I don't like, is the pointy bit where I normally put the heel of my palm to push out the KIK cylinders.
I can live with that though.

The tool I show in the above posting works extremely well especially on knob cylds where the spring retainers have been bent out too far by someone trying to repair the damaged they caused by using the original removal tool and hammered the cyld out bending the retainers inward. The cyld just pops out so easy with this tool it is worth taking a look at. I still use the original tool to remove the C clip plug retainer as it works fine and don't shove the tool though my hand doing it.

Cool tool Richard, thanks for sharing, I'm almost sad that we don't have knob cylinders, or kwickset locks at all here. :)

I really like the: "Whether you think you can or think you can't - you are right." part :)

I no machinist, and nearly $30.00 for a tool
to remove Kwikset KIK cyls seems expensive.

But, it's only money right?
I found one for just under $27.00

I'll give a review after I've played with it some.

The Arrow RT is cheap, like $5.00. I hope this new tool is 5 times better !
