Help with Schlage lock

Postby garyp » 16 Jan 2014 21:39

Sorry ... but this is my first shot here.

A schlage (sp?) lock. I've been able to open every door in my house (including the deadbolt one, which I was pretty proud of until I realized how easy it was) except one for our mud/laundry room. So I practice on that ...well, life got in the way today and I pulled the door shut while the lock was on .... I tried removing the opposite door, but that has a slide bolt on it, and removing the friggin hinge pins didn't help. The door I'm working on has windows so if have to, I can break them. Needless to say my wife will be an unhappy camper (and so will I because I do the laundry. BTW: those of you who are guys. Does your wife think messing around with locks is a colossal waste of time, or is it just mine? ... I'm married 39 years so it's hard to tell whether she's serious or not and at this stage you don't ask ... something any of you young single guys oughta' note).

So ...four pins that I can feel, and a button thingee on the other side of the lock. I can get the cylinder to turn past 45 degrees, but the lock won't release. There seems to be something solid (i.e., it doesn't feel like the spring-loaded pins) way far behind the lock pins. Is that anything? .... Any suggestions? Other than buy a glass cutter?

Thanks ... I just started lock picking about three weeks ago and love it and just found this place tonight.

Reason: Replaced title "newbie question" with "help with Schlage lock". This helps people search by keyword and gives a quick summary as to what theyre about to click open. Thanks.

Pick it the opposite way.

BTW, it is highly recommended that you don't pick locks that are in use.

A picture may help. Have you tried picking it the other direction? A Schlage should have at least 5 pins, but if you are able to turn it 45 degrees (1/8 of a full turn), you are well past a false set.

This also shows what we tell all the newbies, (and some of the more experienced users)... do not pick a lock in use. If something goes wrong, you got problems.

Good luck,

Gordon

Yeah ... I was doing it with the door open, then — like I said — life happened and I pulled it shut ...

Thanks to all for the advice ...will give it a go in the a.m.

May I also concur with the unwritten rule: Don't mess with locks that are actually on your doors!
