Can a C-Rake be used for SPP?

Can a C-Rake be used for SPP?

Postby parkourer » 5 Feb 2014 15:31

Hey,

Recently, i acquired a C-Rake. I know it is for raking a lock, but my friend, (who is also new to lockpicking, but didnt use any tutorials), came up with this method to hold the handle of the rake down, and drag it out of the lock, therefore pushing all the pins up. It actually works fast, and pretty well. I later knew that this was called SPP. My question is, since a c-rake is meant for raking will this damage the lock, and also if a short hook will do this better. Another question i have is: Is this an actual way of SPP or is there a easier way to do it?

Thanks for any replies

I know that feeling when your new to picking and anxious to progress. With that said, word of advise, try not to double post the same question in multiple places. Doing that is frowned upon. Your original question will get answered just give it some time. Good luck.

I won't sorry. But what do you think?

Pulling the rake across the pins in an outward direction is raking, SPP is lifting the first binding pin to shearline and advancing to the next binding pin and lifting it to shear, and so on untill all pins are at the shearline and the lock opens.
This usually does not happen in the order that raking back to front does.
SPP is a bit harder, and is the marker of a more advanced picker, as raking , while sometimes faster , also depends on luck and often the rake cannot lift a pin high enough , especially if the pin in front of it has a lower shearline.
You need a hook or similar tool to reach under the low pin and lift the pin behind it .
This takes some practice and skill.

I can't see how you could use a rake to SPP a lock. As smokingman's accurate answer demonstrates, SPP consists of feeling out each pin stack one by one. One tool you can use to both rake and SPP is the half-diamond. I find that an off-set half diamond and short hook are the most useful picks in my set.
If you do not manipulate the lock, then the lock will manipulate you
