Speaking of hte best turning tool, what is the metal insert that comes with it for? I've thus far only used to to turn cores out of control so that they are locked again.

When I say BEST Turning tool, I mean a little plastic guy, used as a "replacement core" for operating the lock when the core is pulled.

If by Best turning tool, you mean a modified tension wrench for picking control, I do not own one, either commercial or home made (Although the home made is a planned project). I would guess that by metal insert you are referrng to some kind of shim which can be used with the SFIC tool in some keyways to better position the wrench.

No I am talking about the little black core repalcement that acts as a thumbturn. Except with the one I got it has a metal insert that plugs into the holes in the thumb turn which is gradually stepped down. When I get home later I will post a picture.

Something along these lines but a bit narrower?

This is the tailpiece for some Best brand lever handle locks.

If you make the tools yourself there is a file around the boards somewhere and I know Yahoo! locksports has one in their files because I got mine from there and it is on my desktop at home. The file is a picture with exact measurements to make your own. I don't know any people that manufacture these myself because I finally found a link with crypto after looking through the on-line sales sites I know.

Here is the link to the drawing I posted for an SFIC turning tool. I actually like this one better than the commmercial tool offered at http://www.peterson-international.com.

Oh, and that tailpiece for your thumbturn is also used in SFIC padlocks.
