Padlock with removable shackle and certain geometry

Postby magican » 21 Feb 2014 14:32

Hi,

I'm searching for a padlock with some special properties:

-It should be possible to remove and reattach the shackle. Like the 83 Series of ABUS:
http://www.abus.com/Objektsicherheit/Sc ... VHS04-VH01

-But The brass body of the lock has to be wider that tall, like on this lock:
http://www.abus.com/Objektsicherheit/Vo ... 5/(variant)/05108

Any company or security level is fine for me, I'm located in central Europe. This is to recreate a magic trick, not a lockpicking exercise. :D

As an alternative Question, Is there a way to disassemble any Padlock (e.g. ABUS 45/50)? Or are they manufactured in such a way that it can't be done?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi

Unfotunately nothing pops into my mind with brass body. I mean no actual model.
Since it would be fora magic trick it shouldn't be too expensive.
When I think of removable shackle another thread comes into my mind where we recommended commando locks padlock. You could look around, but they are not really common in central Europe not brass body though.
If you give us a country maybe someone from that country has some idea.

Maybe it's a good idea to look up an visit bigger locksmiths around you and ask around for a padlock fitting your requirements.

As for disassembly, with padlocks it's not too easy to give useful sensible but so generalised instructions. Some padlocks cannot be disassembled, some can be disassembled easily, others require some trick or some drilling. (Esp. here in Europe, as I noticed the padlocks in the US are usually more disassembly friendly.)
In fact some padlocks have disassembly-allowing and non disassembly-allowing versions of the exact same models, so it's too vague to give guide to.
It's also depending how far you want to go.

I know there are other magicians among us maybe if you give a bit more details there will be one of them reading it and able to give help.

Hi, thanks for your reply!

It doesn't need to have a brass body, any material is fine.
I'm from Austria, the biggest pool of ordinary padlocks i've come across is amazon.de, unfortunately they are not sufficiently precise with their descriptions. But they have a lot of US brands.

As far as I know there are no dedicated locksmiths around that have a lot of extraordinary padlocks, usually they sell doors, doorlocks and security systems. Hardware stores have product lines featuring only a few manufacturers, so I would already need to know what I'm looking for.

I'm willing to go as far as I have to to with this, but not unnecessarily.
Drilling into the lock is not an option, the lock has to be uncompromised after reassembly. At least the security and outer look of the lock has to remain in tact, if the comfort is reduced be e.g. a damaged spring thats not a problem.
Tricks utilizing shims and tools for disassembly are fine, assembly though, should require no tools at all.

regards

PS: Perfect would be if it worked with these love locks: http://liebesschloss.de/Liebesschloss

Hi, thanks.
But the illusion requires that it looks like the lock can't be taken apart (at least for the layman...).

It shouldn't be obvious that the shackle can be taken off.
At best the lock would be an ordinary plain lock that nobody would suspect to be decomposable, but due to some special quirk of the particular lock type/brand/etc it can be done when having enough time. :)

My recommendation. Buy the abus one you like. The correct width. Buy 2 completely disassemble 1. To identify the easiest way to remove the shackle. (Probably drill a pin.) partially remove the retainer tip of the shackle so that when opened normally it won't pop past the retainer. But when turned say 90 degrees. It will.

Go to your local locksmith and see if they have brass american padlocks. Most have an adjustable shackle and are easily rekeyed once opened. If its rekeyable kind. They have different size bodies and shackles with different length and diameter. They are very reliable with serated security pins in each stack and anti bump pins. They are also usually hardened and from my experience they're hard to cut without some noise and a struggle. They have 5 6 and 7 pin variations as well. Hope this helps.
