Is my padlock broken?

Postby Bigghoot » 25 Feb 2014 15:05

The other day I found a padlock on my porch and decided to try to pick it. It took a while but finally it popped open but I never turned the tension wrench. So then I tried it without a tension wrench and got it to open again. Now I can do it in a few seconds but everything I've looked up says you need a tension wrench to turn so I'm just wondering if its broken or what?

we cant possibly know without seeing a photo of it.. is it a nice padlock? is it some old made in china thing? is it a luggage lock? a commercial gate lock? what type of pick were you using when picking it. were you raking or using single pin picking method?

Thanks for providing more detail,

The lock was made in China. I was using the back end of a very very small saw. I know that sounds weird but its more sturdy that paper clip I tried to use... I was using the raking method.

You bypassed your cheap lock without knowing it. Look it up.

I agree, I also did this a few times with cheap padlocks thinking I was some kind of lock picking master just starting out. Turns out I just bypassed it
