Spool pins

I can tell when spool pins are in lock usually by a false set. But I was wondering if there is a way to feel for them?

As far as I know, that is how you feel for them.

Something that goes along with the false set, is that when you pick them you should start feel some counter rotation, your tension wrench pushing against your finger, as you begin to set the spool pin.

Maybe a more senior member knows a better way to "feel" for a spool pin, but that's what I know.

You can recognize the model of the lock and know they will be there in some cases.

You do not not necessarily need to get a false set to pick a spool. If you know or suspect it is there, you can push up on the pin until you feel the bottom of the spool setting (feels like two clicks). If there is no spool, this will overset the pin.

When you begin to work with a lock. (Lock Picking) a false set is one of the indications you have a spool or two or three etc.. When you get a false set, you can push up one pin at a time and analyze the feed back.

Counter-rotation is the locks way of telling you, "Hey look, you're pushing up on a spool!" It's the slight rotation you feel on your tension wrench wanting to back to a reset state. If no counter-rotation is felt, then it isn't a spool and most likely the pin you are pushing up on is set (you're ready to move onto the next one).

Push up on every pin one by one, taking your time feeling for that counter-rotation against your tension wrench. What I mean by taking your time, I mean work at every pin for 5-10 seconds or more if you're barely any good at picking. (No offense, We've all been there, done that.)

Once you've detected a spool, push up and hold tension on your wrench. Push up on the spool and you will feel your tension wrench counter-rotate. Keep pushing your pin, and be careful of the counter-rotation because this can lead to a reset of all your pins if you're not careful enough. Push up until you feel the plug go back to either opening the lock, or the false set state. That's an indication that you've successfully defeated the pin and you're ready for more. :D

This is one of the best videos explaining how to pick spools that I've seen:
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.

Bosnianbill's videos are great, I've watched a number of them. Anyone know if he's a member of this group?

I do not think he is. He has perhaps the most popular lock picking channel, a massive audience on his own terms, and a constant interaction in comments and Youtube messaging. I doubt he would have any reason to post on this forum when he has what he has now.

I don't agree...

He is not a member of this forum, nor any other that I know of. But the reasons you posted aren't correct(in my opinion, of course) for not being a part of it.
Bill does know a lot, indeed... He has something to do with Special Forces or somewhat. He is a trainer of covert entry methods or whatever. I don't really know.

But being on a forum is not only about learning new stuff. And not to be a jerk, but even though I admire Bill's knowledge, he will always learn new stuff with the community (I have talked with him once and exposed some ideas and he was very opened to them, didn't look like a know-it-all, so thumbs up to him!).

But being in a forum is also being tied to a community, and help it grow, side to side to it.
And for the little I know about him, he's that guy. So he may have his reasons not to be on a forum (lack of time, patience, whatever). But, in my opinion, they aren't just like "I have lots, and know lots, have no need of being registred on the forum".

If I have misurderstood your post, then I'm sorry, but I think that's what you meant?

bosnian bill likely gets hundreds of comments a day, and is free to contact anybody about anything on Youtube, and people contact him all the time as well.

Youtube as a community is being overlooked here I think. Lock pickers on Youtube generally have a "forum" which is defined by their use of it and personal interactions. It is sort of like Reddit. It is what you make it. A casual user would only see the chaos and randomness, but users of it often have their own subsets which are highly structured.

It is likely he'd be banned quite quickly. I even got banned for a bit and I was actively trying to be a member of the community and play by the rules!

I like Bosnian Bill, I'd never ban him because he's a nice guy.. I banned you because you were being a douche and someone who cannot be reasoned with because you think you are perfect and don't do anything wrong.

For someone who complains so much about lp101, you sure like to hang out here a lot..

Bosnian Bill is an awesome youtube channel I messaged him on youtube a while ago regarding the Gerda Titan video because I had some ideas about modifying his bump key design and adding high frequency vibration as well(I am still convinced the Titan can be opened very quickly until I have a chance to see my ideas disproven lol) and he seems like a nice guy definitely didn't seem like a "know it all" type

Yeah he is. I like his videos mostly because he's attentive to the details. Also, he guts most of his locks which is awesome because I can see all the pins and workings inside of the lock. So far I've seen like all his 500+ videos. Great guy. :D
