I don't think they make the metal handle ones anymore. lockpickshop probably just has a few of those sets in stock and some old pics other places. From a manufacturers perspective, they use way more of their expensive steel in a metal handle pick than they do with the plastic ones. Peterson did the same thing when they dropped the prices on the Gov't steel picks from $15 to $8. Somewhere there is a pic, on toool or deviants twitter I think, that has an x-ray of Peterson, Rytan, Southord, and maybe someone else's picks with the plastic handles. The metal only goes about 1/2" into the plastic vs a full tang design. This is one reason I like the Peterson Gov't steel picks with rubber handles, they are still the original design so you could take one and cut off the rubber and make a custom handle or another tool if the pick broke.

As for the Southord MAX, black handles are .023 and gray are .031.

Thanks for all your replies. One question though: Why can't they just make them normal size? I mean its not really that hard (Ha, like I would know ). But like @spandexwarrior said (which he helped me realize), the tip is too thin to lift pins. If they would make it less bendy, and a little more thick, then it would be perfect.

BTW:

depends on which set you get, the M2000 comes in metal handles, the M2000B is ABS plastic handles.. There is always the chance who ever picked and boxed your order grabbed the wrong ones, or they have the wrong info on their website. Where did you buy them from?

I tried to get the metal handles in the .023 thickness and was told they did not come in that thickness
with metal, only the plastic.

Its all in the steel. The better Peterson picks use "government steel" which is a much higher quality than many of the other picks on the market.

Our Government Stainless Steel provides a more rigid pick - one that does not bow and bend easily. This steel not only picks better because of it's tensile strength -- it lasts longer. Do you want to spend your time straightening out your bent picks, fishing out broken pieces form the lock, or just making money by opening locks? The choice is yours....

My apologies for derailing a thread, if I have done so.
Just to clarify, I am talking about the .023 thick Max Yield picks.
Those were the ones I was recommending, but they only come with the plastic handles.
You can get the .031 thickness with metal handles, the M2000.
I had ordered some of those but was sent the wrong thing and got a standard set instead.
They were promptly replaced without problem.
I did get some .031 picks but they were just not for me, a matter of personal preference I suppose.

My friend was ranting about how much better his picks were because they were titanium or some such thing but I submit that proper technique and understanding of feedback combined with some cheap hpc picks will open more locks without breaking than some picks made of some titanium molybdenum alloy or some such thing. I must also say I am not an expert though and still get hung up on a Schlage with two spool pins and 92765 bitting or something similar. As I told my friend, you don't have to push hard on pins if you are doing it right. Unless the lock is corroded or broken, there is no reason to push really hard on the pins. In fact it can be detrimental because you can accidentally overset, and if you are on the wrong pin you could slightly spin the plug the wrong way making some of the pins you already set drop. I say get cheap hpc picks for $1.50 each. They are great for learning and for pro use. Their lack of comfort is a plus, because it reminds you that you shouldn't be forcing them too hard. Use finesse, not force!

does southord sell rakes by the singles i have several pic sets and dont really need sets but i have found a city rake from klom like no other and the only way i can find to keep it in stock is to mod. someone elses pick bummer!

when picking spool pins i like a short shaft on my picks they help keep me from slipping around and making mistakes so i have found lockmasters life time warranty a life saver on my pocketbook nothing sucks more then having to dig pic pieces out of a one or two hundred dollar lock lets face it sometimes you just have to get tuff with a lock !! and we all break pick from time to time

I use my M4000 set for crunchy oval 7 pin cylinders like ASSA 700, TRIO VING, HABO, DORMA, and for some rugged padlocks and few cylinders with a huge keyway in it.
Love my M4000 picks, unbeatable ruggedness.
Feels more like abuse not picking.

I actually got a couple of the Max picks. I wish they were a tiny bit shorter. But other than that I like them quite a bit. I put some shrink tubing on them and they feel much better. But as I have said before, everybody like something different. Good luck. Docjon

When I bought my first 4 picks I hated my Petersons... they bent. I know it was because I didn't have a lot of experience at picking.

The more people hate on Southord the more I only want to use them. Picks are like anything you buy... a manufacturer has a low model and high model.
