Master Padlock Oily?

Hey,

So today I found out that there is a hardware store full of all sorts of locks basically right in my backyard (hooray !!). I bought a Master No. 3 for now, because my other one was getting hard to pick, plus, why not have two?

Anyway, I opened up the box, and get out the lock. However, the lock is a little oily.The most part of oil is on the bottom side of the shackle, but there is some on the body as well. I recognize the smell, but i cannot identify it. Now, i heard that lubricating the lock is good, so I was wondering if the lock was lubricated before packaged. I was also wondering if I should wash the lock. What do you guys think?

BTW: The key biting is even so i can rake it easily, and sometimes if i just insert my rake, it opens

I've had this happen with a few of the master locks that I have, particularly my number 3. I think they just lubricate it before they package it up. I don't know if I would wash it necessarily, eventually the oil will wear off.

Why don't they wash it off before they package it? My hands got really oily when i first touched it :p

The oil keeps the lock looking new even if it sits on the shelf for a few years.

So are you supposed to wash the lock once you get it, or is it okay to leave it like this? Will washing it affect the picking in any way? Right now I can rake it in one or two quick motions. Is this because of the oil?

You can leave it as it is, or use a paper towel to clean off the oil from the outside. Would not want to use soap and water to clean it, as it would remove the factory lube from inside the lock cylinder and around the locking dogs.
