Best euro cylinder protector.

Postby cristimm » 3 Mar 2014 7:27

Hi all, this is my first message on this great forum.

I want to improve the security of my door by adding an euro cylinder protector. What model do you think it's best?

Example:

Not too familiar with the ones in your pictures. However, things I would be looking for in a shield are:

* A proper fit that is flush with the face of your lock
* Heavy metal
* Two solid screws
* Steeply angled sides so wrenches have a harder time getting a hold
* Possibly bearings that allow the outer edge to spin if the protector is turned with a wrench

I would avoid:

* Improper fit that allows the face of the lock to stick out the front
* Thin or soft metals
* Thin or weak screws

Also noticed that the protector in the left picture has a spinning shield for the keyway. Good idea, but be sure your key can still reach the face of the lock fully without the shoulder or bow of the key being stopped by the shield. If needed, you may need to trim the shoulder it notch the key bow. Proper function of the lock an key comes first!!!

Also look at door jamb reinforcement. A protector for the lock cylinder does no good if the door can be easily kicked in. :?

Good luck, and look forward to the input from other members here, as well as what you eventually choose to install. :-)

Thanks a lot Gordon for your detailed explanation. The door is strong enough I guess even if it is made in china. It feels very heavy when moved.

I've noticed that the majority of protectors have M6 screws and this is a weak point. I would like one with M8 screws if there are any...

Found a nice one from LOB (Poland). I don't know if the marked thread is M8x1 ore M8x1.5. I want to replace the original screws with M8 all the way through the door.

the crucial part is the little spinning thingy.. is that made of hard, good quality steel as well?
Apply a lubrication to it so it spins very lightly :twisted:

Apart from the Geminy and similar ones which also function as a lock, Zeiss IKon and EVVA and KABA make the best ones. They have different levels, but their top ones are made of thick, high quality stainless steel, are very well manufactured.
Here the models whic have a built in handle are the ones which go, I can recommend them. I've seen Evva-s installed on very high traffic business environment and they will probably last another lifetime.

2 birds with 1 stone :)

Gordon & Cristimm:
This is the one with a handle, not sure if that is the official way to put it . :D

This is the place it came from, from Evva

Zeiss Ikon:
I think it has been shapes specially to allow for the dom diamant to fit in, but not sure!

I couldn't find the kaba one on their homepage, but it looks pretty much like the one at Evva :)

Just look for steel ones, one which feel well made from thick strong materials :)

I like those. Unfortunately they won't fit any door due to not standard bolt hoes. :(

Hmm hard to say then :)
You can go and explore the choice offered by a couple of local locksmiths maybe :)
Now that you seen what you want it will be much easier to choose the right one for yourself

I bought a Mul-t-lock protection from a local store like the one below:

Image

The only thing that I don't like about it is the M6 screws.

Still searching one for my other lock.
