Idea for a lock (just thinking out loud)

Postby SEIRAN » 11 Mar 2014 7:57

Hi guys

I was thinking today about how to design a lock that deters any attempt to pick it. I'm not talking about something mechanically perfect that is impossible to pick (as that does not exist to my knowledge), but rather something that isn't worth the effort. Bear in mind I'm a complete newbie so feel free to shoot this down if it's a stupid idea (which it probably is):

A 7-pin pin tumbler lock in a secure door, but the 7th pin isn't actually a part of the lock's operation but instead triggers an alarm if raised. The key would be either flat at the tip with standard bitting over the rest of it (so that when you slide it in it doesn't manipulate the last pin to a great extent), or it would be short enough to not reach the 7th pin. So in essence the inserted key would manipulate all the pins as it should without touching the 7th. As a picking attempt involves raising all the pins to feel for the one that is binding, the picker would inevitably raise the false pin at the back and trigger the alarm.

I imagine the problem with this (if it's possible to do in the first place) is that every one of these locks would have to be custom made with slightly different specs, otherwise everyone will know about it and create custom tools to defeat it. Apart from that, is it theoretically possible to do?

Seems to be workable. It might be a good idea to have a slight raise possible with that pin so the tip of the key can appear to simply a low cut on the key, with the same kind of tooth between it and the tip of the key as you would see with any other key.

Keep the ideas coming!

Have also thought about using a two-sectional plug. If the plug end with the keyhole face turns without turning the other plug section, as would happen if a tension wrench that was too short to reach the inner plug section, the alarm would go off. Under normal usage, the key would keep the two plug halves aligned.

Cool Idea for sure, if money is no issue,(true thinking out loud) then may I suggest an alarm on every pin, and a board that knows the binding order of the lock and senses picking as oppose to a key entering the lock. Knockout gas or confetti can be shot out from the lock when manipulation is detected just thinking out loud here with you. (LOL)

What about a lock that doesn't have one set of top pins, but many. Making a 360 degree turn essentially many locks with the same bitting (but different binding order)...Somebody make or think of this yet?

There are a few locks that use the idea of multiple bibles for different key positions. Many switch locks do that, as well. That is also the basis for trap pins.

Thanks Gordon, I can put a name to it it now. I really should study key locks more.
