Stripped a Schlage; hard to get key out now

Postby jtucek » 18 Mar 2014 15:30

So I took apart the locks that were supposed to be the new ones on our doors... and then I put them together again. However, while the key goes in fine, and turns fine (better than before!), it is a bit hard to take the key out. OK, honest, it's really hard to get the key out. Now, my random guess is that I didn't turn the knob on the back down tight enough, and that the key is pulling the plug forward just enough to keep the pins from freely releasing the key. But, before I risk the wrath of The Boss, I'd like to be sure that if I simply open them up and tighten the knurled knob at the rear (while pushing that annoying spring loaded pin out of the way) that this is at least plausibly the problem, if not likely.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum! Back in 2006, I too learned the hard way not to touch the locks at work.

It does sound like you have to tighten the knob in the back another 2 to 3 semi circles and use the key to test after you turn the knurled knob. There will be a point that feels nice and tight, but then the plug will be hard to turn.

Please take a look at this thread of others who broke locks that were in use: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=42970

(puts paper bag on head)...

You misunderstand. The boss is at work. "The Boss" is most certainly not at work. Indeed, I'd go to work to get away from The Boss if she was really mad at me :)

Sigh. Yeah. Took apart a lock I needed. Technically this wasn't in use when I took it apart... it was just about to be installed. I had a spare thankfully, which I did put into service. But yes, the lesson of http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=42970 is pretty clear; don't muck with it if you can't afford it to be broken.

I tightened up the knob and it works like a charm now. When I was trying it out before I'd overtightened it a few times, so I backed off on really tightening it down. Too loose the last time, apparently.

Thanks for the help.

Easiest way to test if this is the issue or something else is to place a thumb against the front of the plug holding it in place. If the key now comes out fine you know your problem is a loose retainer cap or retainer ring. Caps are easy to fix, clips require a bit of skill.
