Maybe I should have just gone back to sleep...

Postby GWiens2001 » 29 Sep 2012 5:55

Woke up this morning at 3 a.m. And picked up the 3 KIK cylinders, tension wrench and hook I keep beside the bed for something to do in the dark. 3 schlages: one IC without security pins, one normal 5 pin with all spools, and one 6 pin, all spools. Opened the first one I grabbed, the IC, with no difficulties. The six pin easily succumbed, as well. But after 5 minutes (all in total darkness, mind you), the 5 pin, which is normally very easy, still had not opened. I couldn't even get the tension wrench in correctly.

Finally, I had to find out what was wrong. Went to the kitchen, held the KIK up to the night light, and saw... I was holding the lock backwards. Not as easy when you have the wrench sticking into the plug behind the retaining ring.
Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.

Seen this happen a couple of times in the TOOOL lock picking contests where everyone is blindfolded. That or just not being able to get the wrench in either side. Very frustrating, but really not a practical concern outside of competition/games

I'm fairly new to properly SSPing locks. I have a collection by the nightstand for the same purpose. I also have a collection in the living room for when I'm watching tv. Its all about feel so how I'm teaching myself is by not watching what I'm doing. Ive made similar mistakes at 3 am :)
I love puzzles. Aren't lock just puzzles?

First, how do you even know which locks you are holding in the dark? Last time I tried this, I thought I was holding my No. 3, so I started raking furiously (sleepily), and I broke my rake. It turns out it was the combination lock with the teeny-tiny keyhole, and thats why it broke

You become familiar with your lock when you've picked it enough times. When you do this enough you gain the lockpicker's skill of familiarity. This is when you can spontaneously identify a lock without knowing it. You have to pick 200 locks open before you gain this fantastic skill. :D

Sounds eerily familiar to all of the video games that I played when I was younger.

Yeah you have to put it really close to your nose and smell the key way. You can smell the metal on the keyway. If you scratch and sniff it, you can get a better smell off the lock I've heard. Don't put too much WD-40 on it or else you're going to see the lock open by itself.

You made the right choice not going back to sleep. I went back to sleep once when I had to pee real bad but was too tired. Moral of the story? You can't wash pee out and mattresses are expensive. I had to mow dad's yard the whole summer to pay back for that mattress.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
