Any info on this Schlage padlock I found?

Postby Kefka » 30 Mar 2014 20:36

I was walking home yesterday and came across this Schlage padlock lying on the sidewalk. Looks like it's pretty old, anybody know the workings of these things?

Firstly not sure how much I can speak since you have 1 posts. But its a standard pin tumbler lock with a interchangeable core and I'm nearly 100% sure it's a ball bearing actuator so shimming is a no go.

Man it looks like it had been hit by a train. So much damage to it.

I don't believe it is an interchangeable core lock actually, I think if you open it there will be a screw that holds the key cylinder in the padlock body under the shackle. One thing I have noticed about Ingersoll Rand is they can't wait to stamp Schlage all over their large format interchangeable core products. Interesting key section tho and should be a little bit of a challenge to pick.

You could be right but I was under the impression that a IC was the core of the lock, where you can change the the core with another lock body.

An interchangeable core or IC is a compact keying mechanism in a specific "small format" figure-eight shape. Unlike a standard key cylinder, which is accessible for combinating only via locking device disassembly, an interchangeable mechanism relies upon a specialized "control" key for insertion and extraction of the essential (or "core") combinating components.

I just saw the 8 figure and thought to myself it's a IC. That is what wikipedia says http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interchangeable_core

Sorry if I was incorrect.

Thing is it does look very much like a schlage large format IC Core, as you say.
However I have in my van both the schlage large format IC core & also a schlage padlock that is very much like this one. It is only my familiarity with both that allowed me to make my guess. I don't see why you should be sorry either way. Only way either of us will ever know for 100% is if the original poster does manage to pick this padlock open. I still believe if opened this lock will yield a phillips screw under the shackle hole which releases the standard-type lock cylinder

This is not an interchangeable core padlock. There is a screw under the shackle that allows you to remove the cylinder for service or rekeying.

That round part above the cylinder is just a cover that the bible sits in to hold the cylinder in place. It's what the screw under the shackle goes into.

Nice lock, I have a couple of those myself. Looks like one of the quad or numbered keyways, not really sure.
