Yale 7300 Series Disassembly

Postby jjunginger » 17 Apr 2014 8:05

Hey lock gurus,

I received a few Yale 7315's (keyed alike). They came without keys. So first, I raked them open, which was not too hard because of the relatively flat bitting. Then, I SPP'd them, which again was not too tough with the right amount of tension. Then, I made a "good enough" key by impressioning with a blank and some vice grips (knife edging the blank helped on this). Next, I would like to disassemble and remove the core, to measure the key pins with calipers and cut a proper key for the other locks. I know these aren't interchangeable core locks, and don't mind destroying one, so that I can make a key for the others.

There are a couple of possibilities I can see:

1) There is an access hole near the cylinder, but this proved to be a dead end, as it just houses the spring for the shackle.
2) There is a round access hole (with a flat, round brass cap over it) near the locking side of the shackle. With a punch, I was able to remove this, and it looks like a "service port" if you will.
3) There is a rivet or rivet like piece under the locking half of the shackle, where you would expect to find a screw for SFIC locks. I thought this may also be a good path to try after reading the manual and learning that Yale ships some locks with "loose rivets"
4) Cheat Code: Email Yale tech support to see if they can give me a definitive answer.

So long story short, if any of you guys know how to take one of these apart, please let me know.

Thank you,

-jj

It has been covered many times before on the forum.

If you sand the side of the lock a bit you should notice some pin covers, remove these to rekey the lock. Some people use thermal shock to remove these, others use a drill and a screw.

Thanks, that did the trick. About 15 minutes with some 400 grit sandpaper revealed 7 little brass plugs, 6 over the pins, and one off-center a bit (not sure what that one's for yet). So I center punched and removed the 6 brass plugs that were retaining the springs and pins with a .090" drill (press). After removing each cylinder's contents, I measured and decoded all key and driver pins. Finding the key blank proved to be the hardest part, but after locating one, I now have a working key. Win.

A good reason to learn impressioning. However kudos on the good work.
