noobie question about kwikset cyclinders

This is the old Locksmith business info area and will be broken down to fill in the new sections below.

noobie question about kwikset cyclinders

Postby MikeTheLocksmith » 24 Apr 2014 9:49

I am relatively new to locksmithing. I have been in the field for a little over a year now. I have recently started ordering inventory. While looking at different distributors I have found everything I wanted except the kwikset cylinders with the clips on them. I asked my distributor about it and they said, "just buy the entire handle they are cheap". Although they are inexpensive and not very good, I run into them all the time. I had a customer with one that was held together with 2 metal tabs and a wire. Anyway, does anyone know where or if I can buy just the cylinder for these locks? Or is it best to just replace the entire handle?

Thank you,
Mike

If you mean to replace it because the clips are broken I usually just take an old one out of the junk bin. I quickly learned to quit using the A-1 kwikpull tool as it likes to break off at least one clip & loosens them as well. If you check around you can find an import "tylo" style knob with a pop-out cylinder that also fits kwikset, for around $6.50 or so.

TACO (Transatlantic company) has them.

I have run across the one held in with two metal tabs & a wire before. You are supposed to remove the spindle first & then turn the key 180 degrees & pull out the cylinder, for rekeying. I doubt the cylinders with two clips will stay in place on the tabs & wire model handle.
In my experience the latches that all of these economy kwikset look-alikes come with should not be used. Everytime I try to use the latches they fall apart generating a warranty call back so I just throw in a decent latch. I like to use these on doors with wood shutters or blinds. I only use these on a door with a deadbolt, as these are some of the junkiest locks in our industry today
