Picking BEST/KABA Peaks

Postby lockpickerandrew » 4 May 2014 17:35

I am trying to get experience picking Interchangeable Cores.
I have successfully picked BEST cores, so I moved up to BEST / KABA peaks.
I can not seem to get the thing open. It seems to be very high tolerance, and the pins provide very little feedback.
I think I had it picked to a shear line (no false sets). The peaks has a small protrusion at the bottom of the key which activates a pin or something at the bottom of the cylinder, but I can't seem to find it so was unable to pick it. Also, is there a sidebar like the medeco m3 that has to be pushed in or something on these locks? There seems to be a horizontal or very short pin at the front of the keyway and there seems to be a little something that rattles at the back of the lock which appears to be another pin or something.

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

The small pin at the front is actually in the top of the lock. The protrusion on the bottom of the key is so that the pin wall not fall down when they clyinder is turned 180 degrees.

It is a very small pin just behind the face plate. You should be able to see it it you luup up at it.

Ditto Averagejoe's post. Kaba Peaks has no sidebar. But, newer variations might have a slider on the side that blocks the back of the core. The rattle may just be a stuck top pin that allows the bottom and core pin to move with out spring pressure.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.
