Interesting Old Safe (Deposit Chute)

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

I searched but didn't see any pictures of this style of safe. Thought I'd share this, since I stumbled across it while being nosey in a Washington, DC restaurant.

Nice! I really love that style of safe. Looks like an old Yale or possibly Mosler on there!

I particularly like that the handle for opening the safe isn't actually on it. I'm assuming this was for additional security, but it could be that someone removed it for other reasons at some point in its history.

The lock is likely Diebold, as that is the manufacturer of the safe as well. After a little looking around, there's a slightly more modern one on ebay right now. There's a reason that thing is in the restaurant - they didn't want to move it!

Cool safe! Thanks for posting the pictures.

It looks like that bracket might have been added to place a handle in to pull the door open once the correct combination is dialed in. I don't see where a more permanent handle might have been. Is it possible that the door is slightly spring loaded to pop open once the combination is dialed? On some of these old safes the boltwork is all retracted just by getting the combination dialed in so you don't need a handle to retract the bolts.

Either way, nice looking safe!

Had a similar safe left over at a store that I helped covert to new owners. Previous business left us the combo and said it stayed with the building because it was way to big and heavy. We never used it because of the fear of easy entry with the hinges on the outside (paranoid owner). And yes, they had a coil of wire on each hinge, acting like a spring to pop the door open about 1/2 an inch, enough to grab with your fingers.

I figured the door had to be sprung a bit.

As for the hinges, most safes have hinges on the outside, even large vault doors, unless they open in instead of out or are a plug type door.

Either way I'm sure it looked cool on the outside of the building!
