Rekey Help

Hey guys, new to the forum, learned a lot in a small amount of time already!

I need some help though. I'm a realtor and recently started getting into picking and now I'd like to start rekeying my own locks just for something new (and more convenient) on some of my homes.

I deal with mostly foreclosures though, so the original keys are usually unavailable to me. So I would pick the lock to get in, then rekey. I'm just not so sure on how to rekey it without the original key? Is there any demonstrational videos or threads on this? I tried looking but a lot of the locksmith vocab is a little advanced for me so any help would be appreciated!!

OK, you're looking for a whole lot more information than I think you realize, and that's fine, that's how you learn. I'm going to suggest that you go watch or read instructions for disassembly and assembly of Kwikset, Weiser & Schlage residential knob and leversets, and also instructions on cylinder shimming. You will need to purchase certain tools, but if you read up on all of that, you'll be headed in the right direction.

This is how foreclosures work in my area and I have been doing them for over 30 years for Prudential, Coldwell, Fannie, Freddie, VA and many banks.

Most foreclosures are put on a specific key and then rekeyed when the home is sold. Typically the front lock is forced open by the realtor, the handyman, the yard man, a clean up crew and they slap on a new lock already keyed. The deadbolt is typically disabled on this door.

Once sold a locksmith is generally called and rekeys all locks on the house for the new purchaser and checks proper operation of all locks and deadbolts, replaces any defective locks. This is to remove liability from the realtor in case something should happen to the new owner.

Out my way the banks will only pay about $100 to secure a foreclosed upon home, so when I rekey the house it's always after all the shenanigans have taken place & the home has been re-sold to a new owner. I often find the deadbolts were all replaced with the cheapest lock the home store sells, which never match the other hardware on the doors.
