I read not to practice on your own doors

Postby logically » 28 May 2014 12:01

Hi all,

I thought I would share a funny little story about how I messed up my patio door lock.

I had just received my picks in the mail and I was overly anxious to begin probing and raking on whatever I could. I had two masterlock padlocks that were lying around my house. I made quick work of them with a rake pick.

I was very excited and was starting to annoy my wife with all my talk of picking and what not so she locked me out on the patio. She said , "If your so good then get back in!"

I vaguely remembered reading something about not trying to pick an actual in use door, but with my wife's challenge ringing in my ears I went to work.

I was able to rake open my patio door within a minute or so. The plug spun upside down and I was in. However I couldn't re-lock it. I spun the plug back around with my torque wrench and tried the key. nothing. I was thinking maybe the pins were stuck so I smacked the door above the lock hoping to knock the pins back down and reset it. Instead I was greeted with a tiny metal disk falling out of the keyway. Clearly a spacer pin as my residence has a master keyed system.

My lock now turns and locks from the inside with the little handle, but keys are no good to turn it. I know it was foolish to do such a thing. I just thought maybe some of you would get a kick out of this story. My wife was both impressed and terrified by how easy it was for someone with no training to get into our locked house. And now she wants me to replace the patio lock that I broke with a much higher security lock.

Thanks for reading. :)

Good story. You're not the first person around here to learn this lesson the hard way. Also congrats on picking your first lock. There is a 5 page thread dedicated to stories just like yours, you may enjoy reading it.
