I'm not sure how many pins there are but you should be able to count the bitings in your key to figure it out.

Another method is to insert your half-diamond upside down in the keyway below the pins and all the way to the back of the cylinder. Then push up on all of the pins and pull the pick out slowly and listen to the number of clicks as the pins spring back into position. If you don't have a half-diamond, any piece of flat thin material (metal) will do the trick. Do it a few times to be sure you're hearing them all click.

How exactly are you "bypassing" the lock?

That could have four pins and also as anti bump pin in the back. Not really sure. Mine has a 5UP on it and it appears to have anti-bump pin.which you could say has five pins but only four are actually used for the bitting. So if you are actually causing the last pin to rise into the Bible then that would cause it not to open. I have never had that problem but I guess it could happen.

For the first time, have seen one of those 5UP locks. Actually, received it with a number of Master padlocks that needed keys made, half of them were mine to keep afterwards. There was a 1UP, 3UP and a 5UP. Turns out the batch were keyed alike, so after impressioning four of them, just copied the keys for the rest. The 5UP did not have security pins, and was only four pins.

By chance, are the xUP series the ones you get where you put in the key and hammer it in to key the lock to your existing key?

All I know is the Master 5UP lock I have has a fifth pin that does not really do anything as far as opening the lock with the key. I know for a fact my lock has 5 pins upper and lower. I opened it up just to see a few minutes ago. I ground the pins on the bottom of the lock. The rear lower pin stays flush with the shear line. It does not appear to ever be touched by the key. It looks like it is there for a anti-bump pin even though I don't really see how it could be of much use for security. There is also different size serrated upper pins. It follows something like an IC lock where you must follow a strict code size of pins to avoid crushing the springs..

Yes Master has a special, easy to copy tool that fits around the key you are preparing the UP lock to fit. The tool presses the plug (keyhole) into the cylinder by shearing off the serrated pin stacks
Unfortunately if you use a key not cut to master padlock depths, that key may not function after you get done. I have many of the UP padlocks in stock, they have some dif shackle lengths available as well.

A #5 Master padlock has 4 pin tumblers inside, just like the #1,3&7 padlocks do.
