No Security pins in a Brinks High Security?

Postby cheveedodd » 6 Jun 2014 19:57

After 2 weeks I finally feel confident that I have "the feel" for standard pin tumbler locks. I can work out the binding order and SPP up to 5 pin locks. I haven't tried any 6 pins yet...

So, I decided to go pick up a Brinks deadbolt after reading many recommendations for them as training locks with security pins. I made sure to get the High Security lock... yet... no security pins? Where did I go wrong?

That is the DIY security pin cylinder. Put the driver pins into a drill and use a file to make them into the kind of security you like! 8)

Funny, most of their padlocks have spool pins. Go figure.

Yeah, I have one of their laminated padlocks and I can't quite get it. I assume it has security pjns. I was hoping to set this up as a 2 and 3 pin with security pins for practice. Oh well.

Unless you want a deadbolt .. I agree with Bosnia Bill.... Practice the following locks in this order

Master 140 - 4 Pin 1-2 will be Spools
Master 911 - 5 pin 4 will be Spools
Master 570 - 5 pin 4 security pins
American A5200 - 5pin probably all serrated

Or a practice lock like this one would work

Hope this helps ..
When I finally leave this world.. Will someone please tell my wife what I have REALLY spent on locks ...

And don't forget to check out MrWizard's practice locks. He makes great ones, with standard pins, spool pins, and serrated pins. It is a Schlage C keyway, so you have to learn to negotiate the keyway with your picks, as is the case with most locks. And best of all, he is not just a friend of mine... he is a member here!

The practice lock from learnlockpicking.com mentioned above has a Sargent LA keyway, and you can drive a truck into that keyway sideways. Great for the first week you are picking, but then it is too easy since you have no difficulty moving the pick to any pin, without risk of moving the other pins. Even a Master #3 padlock has a harder keyway to move a pick in. You will still learn a lot from that practice lock, and it is good for getting down the basics, but then you will need to get another lock to work with.

Just my 2 cents.

That is strange, my brother let me have a Brinks deadbolt that he'd replaced after using for a very short time (I wasn't rekeying or anything when he'd done this) and had lost the keys to. I felt like a fool picking that thing for 3 hours without success, until I took it apart and realized it had 3 spool pins! Gordon must be right, you got the DIY high security version.

Very strange in deed my friend! LoL I remember my first brinks. Pain in the ass... Trust me.
Well anyways the only weird thing about this lock is that it didn't come with any spools. Where are they it?! (slams hands on computer desk and keeps typing)...

MsEifert. That is the video that started it all for me a couple of years ago. Great vid, very informative and straightforward IMHO.

I just bought a Brinks to pick. A 5 pin high security. Picked very easy. I gutted this brass padlock and installed serrated pins in three chambers and two mushroom pins. I picked it up and could.t open it. I told my wife this is the kind of lock they need to build. She told me to try it again. Well it popped in less than thirty seconds the second and third and fourth times. Total junk.

Yeah. No idea what happened here. I might buy another just to see. Here's the box in case anyone is curious. Picked up at my local WallyWorld.ImageImage

Definitely NOT bump or pick resistant!
