Prefered Drill Bits for drilling a Lock

Hey Guys,

Quick Question...
What is the best type of drill bit you use when drilling out a lock?
I used a few the other day and it took longer than normal...still got it drilled out, but by the end both bits were quite ruined.

I know there are a few different types, but i thought i was using a better quality bit and apparently i wasnt.

What are the best?
and what type of driver is best?

my apologies, I assumed that bc it is a part of the Locksmith Business it would be discussed in this section...I guess i don't understand why i cant get my professional question from fellow locksmiths out there regarding drilling a lock, and the hardware they use...but i can switch over to a different section and get a step by step tutorial on how to make picks.. and step by step assistance of picking any lock out there...seems like a double standard. but this is just my opinion.

I own and operate a locksmith company, I've been in the field a few months now...but still this is a question from a locksmith to a locksmith. Where would you recommend i get this question answered? I am a member on here so that i can bounce my questions off those in the same profession so that i can provide better service to those i serve. but i just don't see why this subject would be prohibited?

I meant no offense, I was just giving you a heads up. I have a feeling when an Admin sees this they will chime in and explain...I can't speak for them but I believe the rule is in place to prevent criminals and people who are up to no good from getting their hands on sensitive information, this is why there is an Advanced section that is not open to anyone who might end up here from a google search. As you probably know criminals use destructive entry more often then not because its often easy and requires little skill. Compared to lock picking which is a skill that requires countless hours of dedication, that of which most criminals will not bother to learn because its easier to physically break things. If you are intent on being a part of the community and want to speak about advanced topics I encourage you to stick around and apply for access to the advance section when you meet the requirements. As a trade locksmith I'm sure you have a wealth of knowledge and can be a valuable contributor to the community.

Hey Dave,

I understand what you're saying...why would drill bits be a sensitive subject? It's really up to the site owner and the mods.

Not to step on Divinorums' toes here, but it may or may not be. I completely agree with everything that he said, but sometimes there is a fine line as to what is allowed and what isn't. Like he mentioned, the mods will probably step in at some point if it gets too sensitive.

There is discussion here on drilling out locks, some by the site owner. While specific types of bits aren't discussed, quite a bit of discussion regarding drilling is already there. Maybe post the question to that thread and see what happens.

Thanks Mike. No toes to be stepped on here. I have no authority here whatsoever. Just trying to help newcomers out. Often on internet forums the rules page gets overlooked for whatever reason. I have been guilty of this myself and always appreciate when anyone lets me know something could be right/wrong/on the fence. I could be entirely wrong based on your findings. Again, I did not intend to put a gag in OP's mouth and if that's how my post came across I apologies.

Let me try to explain.. you may be asking in a locksmith to locksmith sub forum, but it is open to the entire internet to view and chime in, not just locksmiths, and I would hope as a locksmith you'd want to keep certain exact details to yourself or between locksmiths for the pure sake of protecting the public from bad guys who may see the posts and misuse the info.. if you want to talk freely on a locksmith only forum there's a place called Clearstar that serves this purpose and everyone's ALOA and SAVTA membership numbers are verified and checked and then you can talk all you want about best way to pick a car ignition, drill a house or business lock, or exact drill points for getting into a safe.

Being a totally free yet extremely useful forum, we only ask people follow a very few common sense rules to keep the place going smoothly and not teaching the entire planet how to break into things.

If you want to email a fellow 'smith on here directly you can always send them a Private Message for more sensitive topics, and I suppose I'm ok if someone tells you which brand drill bit to buy so it lasts longer than whatever you're using now, but the thing that I'd say would not be good to discuss is the actual drill points for locks. If someone wants to go see a video of some hack drilling a shearline on youtube, then they can go there and get their fill, but I'd like to see this forum not become a super easy one stop shop for bad guys, come here and learn it emporium of lock picking.

not a problem guys,

I understand the provisions and i do agree with safeguarding the specifics of our trade. I appreciate all the feedback that has been given regarding this subject and will keep it all in mind in future postings.

I will pursue this answer and guidance from another trusted source in the meantime since i am not eligible for the Advanced Section quite yet (fairly new at this point to this site). In due time i am confident that i will eventually meet those requirments and be able to utilize the resources in that part of this site.

Thank you all for the clarification and just know that i am in know way sour or turned off by the limitations.
