Which picks?

Postby EvoRed » 26 Oct 2004 16:52

Hi all,

I only have the Majestic cylinder pick set at the moment (well two sets in fact!) and I'm ordering some new picks tomorrow and, for around £100, was looking at a couple of sets from HPC - the 60 piece (professional) set and the 2000 stainless steel series 16-piece...

Anyone with any experience of either or both any comments on which to go for?

Cheers

Errm... You probably don't need the 60 piece set.

I have the 35 piece set with colour coded aluminium handles and it is more than enough. Why I say this is there are so many duplicates even in this set.

I'd reccommend you try Peterson's in adition to a HPC set - Lockpicks.com as far as I know is the only way to get them to you in the UK, unless Peterson has sorted out their site so international credit cards aren't rejected.

HPC 2000 rocks big time! Of all the picks I've had (a lot) these are still the best. The finish is great on the tips and the handles (requires very little filing/sanding to make it perfect) and the steel is fantastic. It gives very good feedback and is quite strong, yet if you do bend it you can bend it back again without a problem. For example I've just discovered that a few Abus dimple locks I have can be raked open with my HPC2000 DeForest-Pick. Unfortunately to do this I have to move the pick vertical to the keyway (imagine raking just over the pins in a Mul-T lock) which is quite heavy for this delicate pick.
I've bent it back about 20 times now and still no problems :D
Also their rather narrow shape is perfect for european cylinders.

And on top of that I can see no way of someone needing all the duplicates in the 60 pcs set.

Take the HPC2000!
It's not the tools that open the lock. It's me.

I vote with PickPick on this one.

You simply don't need the 60 piece set right now. (Or ever really)

Cheers all, I wasn't aware there were that many duplicates in the larger HPC sets. As I thought, I will take the 2000's for now then.

I will keep Peterson's in mind for the future.

HPC products are available from distributors only. The exception to this rule is spare parts.

Pick sets, picks, and other tools are sold through distributors.

One of the best places is www.lockpicks.com
