Lever Tumbler Lock Help

Postby tastycrumpet » 21 Jun 2014 0:14

Ok, So I will start by saying this is for a safe, or more a locked drop-box. This is not stolen and it's in my possession. A quick background on the story is that I'm part of a "safe exchange" on reddit where basically, someone puts stuff in a safe and sends it to you, then you figure out how to open it, do so and then send one to the next person! A link to this is here - http://www.reddit.com/r/WhatsInThisThing/comments/28o1eg/so_i_received_a_safe_in_the_mail_today/

My problem isn't with the safe itself, but the lock. I've got a lot of experience with pin tumblers, but none whatsoever with lever locks.

Here is the safe/drop box:

Here is the best shot I can get showing the levers:

Now, After finding the same model of box online, I've determined these are what the keys look like (I don't see any special warding or curtain interaction on these) Image

So, I've spent the last day studying lever locks and the mechanisms. I've had a cursory play with moving the levers which is fine, so I'm comfortable with the manipulation of those. My problem at the moment is where to apply tension to retract the bolts? Every lever lock I've seen examples of, has a curtain that connects to the bolts and you can slide this to move them or to put tension on them. This lock however I can't figure it out. The keys don't indicate any special nub that would engage this, the red and silver walls you see are fixed and static, they certainly don't move. Also, the keys that come with this model are double sided, however inspection of the lock only has levers on one side, so I think the other side may be a decoy?

My question to you is, firstly has anyone experienced this box before? Secondly, where should I expect the mechanism to move the bolts to be? I'm crafting a tension tool (a stick with stiff wire perpendicular) but I can't for the life of me figure out where to apply the tension.

I appreciate any time you've spent reading the above. Hopefully I can get this open soon!

Can't immediately figure out how to edit the post, so I wanted to say that I did read the rules prior to posting. I know this is technically a "safe", but the lever lock itself is much more common and used in other things. Plus the safe forum I could only find combination locks and dials so I figured this would be the best place!

The levers are only affected by both sides of the key... at the same time. When the key is turned, they are in a gap in the levers. One side of the key lifts the levers, the bottom side is a check to be sure the levers are not lifted too high, or it will block the lever and stop the key from lifting.

Look carefully at the keys in your picture. Note that when one side is not cut, the other side is cut all the way. When it is partially cut, so is the opposite side. When it is fully cut, the opposite side is not cut at all. The distance from one side to the opposite side does not change on that key.

The lock you have is cheap, but is a great one for learning to pick lever locks. They key you pictured is indeed the type of key needed for the lock.

Look around the side for information on lever locks. They can be fun to pick! You will need to make tools to pick lever locks. These are made from bicycle spokes, but they will not work if the levers are thinner than the diameter of the picks. It also shows the key, and the only tool needed to make the key:
