where to get cheap weslock handlesets?

Postby victorylocksmith » 26 Jun 2014 3:05

a crappy 20 year old weslock interconnected handleset broke recently. i charged the owner $120 to fix it but it's just so old and crappy, it broke again after a few weeks. so at this point, im just going to buy a new one that hopefully fits the exact dimensions and throw it on the door. anybody know of any suppliers where i can get this lock as cheap as possible? i am already waiving the installation fee because the $120 they initially paid, didnt really workout because the lock broke again so quickly. so in order to actually make some money on this because it is a with a subcontracting gig which means i only get half the profits, i have to try to get the lock as cheap as possible to realistically break even. im looking at getting a lexington interconnected handleset. the only issue, is that the contemporary lexington has a knob to turn from the inside and the one i worked on originally had a crappy lever handle.

You'll be lucky if you can find a 20 year old weslock, I have one or 2 of their knob locks gathering dust in my shop, but nothing like a handleset

I'm always surprised when I find an old one and I do my best not to touch it, unless I will get to throw it in the brass bin later

This is a common question asked all the time. The problem is the now out of production handleset. So what to do?

First, look thru a good wholesale catalog covering everybody's locks. Find a handleset close to what you need to replace.

THEN get an Ilco cylinder designed for replacements, like the one for knobs, deadbolts, etc. (K500 series) in your keyway. In this case with a Weslock, you will have to use the dreaded "composite" keyway. It will work.

Now, just swap the Ilco cylinder, now keyed to the customer's key into the new handleset, and install the whole thing in their door. Problem fixed.

There has to be someplace a design "close" to the foot print of the original. If nothing else, get a Don Jo plate, cover the existing holes and do a complete installation.

All will like the final product, will work well for many ages, and you just got another kudo for knowing how to fix an "unfixable" problem.

i have searched long and hard and found nothing even close to the composite weslock, so as a result i ordered it from handlesets.com or something like that. even worse so, at first it looked cheap but then i found out they only sold the front and back piece seperately so, i ended up paying $50 more than i thought i needed to for a crap weslock backpiece.

it was either stick with the exact same model, or do some MAJOR filling in of the door and touch up paint work. all in all considering these guys i am doing the work for are cheap as hell, it doesnt make sense to put in that much labor to get paid pennies. so as a result, im just going to throw on a new lock as easy as i can and make a quick buck from up charging them, then getting the hell out.

We just tell the customer that any painting and patching is up to them unless they want to pay. The cheap customers are happy to patch and paint the door themselves.

I found mines on a good fair. I guess on amazon sometimes the products can be not as described and takes time to refund etc. On the fair you get what you pay. It's simple.
