need a more secure locks for reinforcement

I think you guys could help me on this.

I just move to a new place and I'm thinking of installing reinforcement locks on the my doors. Aside from lock built into the doorknob, what other kinds of locks can I install?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions you got. :)

Hi and welcome to the forum,

If you can help us by telling us your location, or putting it in your user profile, we will be able to give better advice on which models and styles of locks would be available in your city/state/country and where you may be able to purchase them.

Thank you,
Squelchtone

Hi, I just moved to Atlanta, Georgia. It is in profile as well. I need something that works great but I don't want to overkill... just the necessary things. Any suggestions?

I like the design of the Segal Jimmy Proof Deadbolts, as far as new locks for reinforcement. For reinforcing you current locks, I find this method effective:

+1 for the jimmy proof locks. if you get the one that is double sided its not a bad idea to replace or repin the Segal cylinder. Their cylinders from my experience are easy pickings. Also a good grade 1 deadbolt reinforced with a box strike and longer screws secured to the wall stud is not a bad idea.

Are your doors wood? metal? are the door frames wood or metal? other than knobs, you should have some sort of deadbolt, since many knobs can be opened using the old credit card trick. The Segal style mentioned above is a great choice, others exist as well and are only limited by your budget. You could get a deadbolt at home depot for $40, a better deadbolt at a local locksmith shop for $100, or a premium deadbolt with key control from one of several manufacturers sites, or from a local locksmith who sells a particular brand such as Mul-T-Lock, Abloy Protec, Medeco, Bilock, Schlage Primus, etc.

Most folks here will agree that a $200 dollar deadbolt doesn't matter much if you put it on a door and frame made of pine, or if there is a big glass window next to the door. Consider things like motion lights, longer hinge screws, door wraps from companies like DonJo, cctv cameras, an alarm system and some yard signs and window and door decals, and good locks as part of a total solution.

If those things are not on your list right now, and you just want to start off with a better lock than what your new place came with, then we can still offer some choices, but tell us more about the door and frame, post a photo of the door and frame and the current lock, if you feel comfortable doing so, this will all help us offer advice suited best to your current situation.

Thanks
Squelchtone

Ps. Divinorum snuck in like a ninja and submitted his reply just before me, he offers good advice, as does YouLuckyFox.

You guys gave me great choices.

I'll talk to a local locksmith to help me with my plan of putting deadbolts. I'll check all the brands you have suggested. I'll send you guys follow up questions whenever I have. Hope you guys are still available to help me.

Thank you again.
