disposing of locksmith tools in California

I was told I could sell the tools to a licensed locksmith. How would I go about verifying this? Do I need to register the sale? The tools came from a family members estate. I just want to keep the items out of the wrong hands and hopefully make a little money in the process.

Walk into a local locksmith shop and get what you can for them, if that shop doesn't want the stuff, find another one using google maps. Don't call the first number in the phone book, make sure it is a real shop. Don't put them on craigslist or ebay unless you want to deal with the general public, which can get very interesting.

Yeah. According the the law, you're supposed to record the sale on a receipt stating their name and address. Followed by a signature. (I'm in California and have asked this question so I would know.)

I've sold a couple of sets on craigslist, and to be honest. Things did get a bit interesting. There was this guy who texted me in these words,

"Knowing that there are many home invasions going on in the area, do you really think that it would be a good idea to sell lock picks online? I hope you get lucky and get someone who is responsible and won't do anything malicious with them."

Another guy was asking me to teach him how to pick a lock open.

Some people also get sketchy when you sell them these things.

So expect stuff like that if you're going to post them on CG or BP.
