Is it weird?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Is it weird?

Postby GrzyWhop33 » 16 Jul 2014 13:27

So I have a practice lock, cannot remember where I bought it from, that you can re pin it any way you want to. The question is, is it weird that I get bored picking it and enjoy manufactured locks more?

If you have to ask.... well it's weird.

Why do you like picking them better than the repinable locks? Is it because they are easier?

You can change the bitting on that lock, but the binding order isn't going to change appreciably, so I imagine it would get boring after a while.

I agree a practice lock is much less interesting than a bunch of different locks. Each lock has its own personality, different feedback, the pins have way varying behaviors and friction, the keyways are different...

Get a bunch of locks and enjoy your hobby

I have a few locks already, I just got this to cut down on the cost of buying many locks. But I do agree with each lock has it's own personality. For instance, I had bought a 4 pack of master 140's with the same key years ago to lock up my lockers when I was in the navy. But each one picks differently.

I agree that each lock has its own personality and I would rather have a pile of different locks.

I also agree the cost can really build up.

I found that the junk guys at my local flea market are the perfect solution. I've found dozens of locks in their stalls. My default line is, "I found a lock with no keys, I'll give you a quarter." Surprisingly, it works about 80% of the time. And once in a while you run across some pretty nice locks. Even an expensive lock is worthless to them if it doesn't have any keys.
