Is this notch significant?

I'm looking at two Schlage keys (an SC1 and an SC4) and I'm wondering if the small notch at the bottom has any significance. I don't see the notch when I look at uncut SC1 or SC4 blanks. Is this some kind of extra security pin? FWIW, I believe both keys I'm looking at are part of master key systems (both are user keys).

The SC1 and SC4 blanks that I use also have that notch at the bottom of the key. My understanding (from observation) is that the notch near the bottom shoulder helps the key seat into the key way properly when inserted into the lock. It does not have anything to do with an extra pin or anything like that.

Must depend on the blanks. Mine have the notch.

Great. Thanks for the clarification. Glad to hear there's nothing extra to worry about when opening these locks! I think my blanks are LSDA, I get them from my locksmith.

I think it is a radius to relieve breakage, but that is a guess.

That's a machining trick to make sure you have a proper 90 degree cut. I did the same thing on lathes.
