Help me choose a first lock

Postby jmart432 » 30 Jul 2014 1:46

Ive got my first pick set coming in the mail but i need to get a lock just for picking. Since ive never picked a lock, i understand that it would make sense to get one without security pins and with not too many pins. Ideally i want a master lock (easier to find/buy).

Any suggestions?

-Cheers, Jacob

Welcome to the forum!

This is one of those questions for which exist hundreds of threads, please browse through them for the answer.

it would also help if you provide which country / state you are from because we have folks here from all over the world and each country locks that are unique to that geographical location.

Poke around, it's all here,

You probably want to stay away from Lockwood as a beginner. Some of them can be difficult to pick. Go to a hardware store and look for some cheap Chinese padlocks, or some Master locks (I hear they are used from time to time in Australia). Those might be some good choices. If possible, make sure the packaging does not say anything about special pins.

Hi jmart432,
Go to Mitre 10 and get a couple of Master Lock Padlocks, they seem crappy enough to practice on ( way over priced tho )

I've always had good luck getting low-end practice locks for free by asking gym/pool staff if I can raid their lost and found. People abandon locks in locker rooms all the time and rarely seem to come back for them.
