I need Locks!

Postby bowman78 » 22 Jul 2014 16:14

Hey guys, I'm looking for locks to pick. I heard people have been able to get great deals for a bunch of locks at locksmiths, getting locks that have lost keys. I've called around and found no locksmiths with used locks. I was suggested to look at companys that tore buildings down, and they didnt even have any. So I'm out of ideas. All i can think of right now is to purchase a re-pinnable lock (Which i have no clue how much one is, or where to get one. Also have no clue where i would get more than just the pins in a lock). I also heard you can get a "deadbolt cylinder" whatever that is, and re pin that. I searched Canadian tire for a Deadbolt Cylinder and they dont have anything aside from a whole doorknob and such. My only other thought would be to go search a junkyard for some locks... hoping they arnt locked to anything, that would bring lock picking to a whole new level. "The challenge is to get as many locks picked before you pass out in the 40C weather!"

go on ebay or craigslist and look for "deadbolt" "padlock" "old deabolt" "old lock" or post an ad on craigslist asking for old padlocks, deadbolts, and lock cylinders people may have, and that you are interested even if they dont come with keys. or if you have some cash, buy locks on ebay, look for rim cylinder, mortise cylinder, euro profile cylinder, padlock, KIK cylinder, etc

good luck,

Thanks for the suggestion Squelch, I found quite a few results and they are relatively cheep. Most are whole doorknobs and stuff which I'm okay with, i would just prefer not. I have 1 more question before I decide to go on a frenzy on craigslist, or to purchase something from a website. I was looking at the sparrows website, the same that I ordered my Sparrows Picks from. and they had a few sparrows cutaway locks it looks like.

They had a "progressive spool pin lock" and a "progressive serrated pin lock." as well as a "cutaway lock standard pins" and "cut away lock spool pins" They are all around 15$ to about 30$ and i was wondering if the pins are swappable.

They also have a Progressive Locks set which has 4 cutaway locks with a set amount of pins in each.
Really like i stated previously, my question is are there ways to change the amount/length/kind of pins inside these locks?
If not could you recommend some locks that you can do this with.
My goal is to get a single lock that can be used for a beginner and an advanced picker.
Thanks in advance, for everyones help!

You should look into a practice lock like they offer here http://learnlockpicking.com/
The pins are easily changed and you can put from 1 to 6 pins. If you get the challenge version you will be able to make it more difficult as your skills improve by adding the included spools to the lock.

You can also find these repinnable locks on ebay that include extra regular/security pins.

Those are really expensive, shipping from US to Canada is like 20$ so its 60$ to get a 40$ Challenge lock.

If you perform a quick ebay search for "practice lock with ez repin" you will find several models that are around $20 before shipping.

So I ended up just sucking it up and purchasing a Practice lock Challenge. I hope its worth it. I didn't have to make an account or anything, and they never said how long it will take. Does anyone happen to know approximately how long?

I called like 4 or 5 locksmiths in my area, all of them seem to not have any.
I live in Canada if that might be why.

i would recommend not cold calling a locksmith .. Go to there shop talk to them, Tell them you are a locksport hobbyist .. And buy something from them .. Offer to trade Beer, Pizza, Sandwiches something for used scrap locks... If you make it seem like you will to trade something for them and ask them to hold on to them you may stand a better chance.
When I finally leave this world.. Will someone please tell my wife what I have REALLY spent on locks ...

Some things are eternal. The distance of space. The passage of time. Taxes. The need for locks. :D
