master trigger lock won't open using correct key (Master P25

Postby minerd » 9 Aug 2014 16:19

I have a Ruger .22 "Single Six" revolver, purchased new about 5 years ago. I rarely use it, and keep a trigger lock on it when I'm not using it. The trigger lock is made by Master lock and the two keys that go with it are Master and labeled P250. I have checked online to make sure they're the correct keys, and they are. But, for some reason, they will not open the trigger lock. Here is a link to a picture of the lock and key -- it looks exactly like mine.
http://grabagun.com/catalog/product/view/id/4904?gclid=CKH-4tSKh8ACFQ5gMgodDnIApQ
Can anyone give me a clue as to why the keys would stop working (they've worked many times in the past) or even better, what I can do to get the lock to open? For those who haven't used a trigger lock, it has two pieces -- you put one on each side of the trigger guard and the squeeze them together until the snap into place -- so it's impossible to pull the trigger. This one was squeezed good and tight and now I can't get it open no matter how much I fiddle with the key. The keys both go all the way in, but they just will not turn.
If I can't get the key to open the lock, I don't know what I'll do because the lock looks extremely tough and I'm sure it's made to be very difficult to open without the key.
Does anyone know enough about these kinds of locks to help me out? I would be most appreciative!

That is the wrong key .. Key code is for a Padlock !!

We are not in the business of helping people who "lost" their keys.. A locksmith should be about to open it in about 2 minutes for a small fee

Does the key turn?
If it was put on "good and tight" as you indicate, you may need to squeeze it together while turning the key to get it to turn and open.
There may be too much pressure to allow the ratcheting mechanisim
to work freely.

Listen, try and understand that this is a forum for locksport enthusiasts not a help hot line. Do we help people, yes sometimes but it depends on the circumstances. We get a lot of people who register and ther first or second post is hey help me open this. We are generally skeptical of posts like this because we do not know if the person is telling the truth or trying to gain access to something they shouldn't have access to. After all this is the Internet. Considering that we are talking about access to a firearm, no one here is going to tell your outright exactly how to open this lock. Having a professional locksmith open the lock is great advice. Have you tried contacting master lock? Did you register the product? Do you have proof of purchase? They may be able to send you new keys. A locksmith should also be able to make you a new key.

The P250 key does not seem to be an individual key code which is why when looked up via code reference it does not return to a trigger lock but instead a different kind of padlock. P250 seem to be the type of key, not the key code specific to that lock. I'm thinking this is the case because there are a bunch of master locks listed on the Internet that say P250. It's doubt full that they would all have the same individual key code. At the end of the day my guess is you simply have the wrong key. Your key fits but is not cut to open the lock. Is it possible you have mixed up the keys?

Smoking man makes a really good point. Does the key turn? If the key turns then yes it is the correct key and it could be that the trigger lock is just really tight that its not coming apart. If the key does not turn then its probably the wrong key. It is possible for parts inside the lock to break and the correct key wont work, however it's probably more likely that the key is wrong and possibly got mixed up. I do have one of these same exact trigger locks btw.

I would rather give the owner of this lock the benefit of the doubt that he knows what key goes to his pistol lock than browbeat him like he is breaking into a laundrymat.

From experience, I agree with smokingman. This type of trigger lock uses the same codes as the small Master padlocks.

The key may not turn at all if it is in a bind due to being put on too tightly. Get some large visegrips or a C-clamp and gently squeeze the lock a little tighter while turning the key. It will probably open. If not, it would be time to use the rotary pick.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

Once again .. My apologize.. Yes.. The key is a common blank that goes to many different locks.. So, I never got an answer if the key turns or not .. Then I agree 2 options .. No Turn Probably wrong key .. If key turns then to much tension on the trigger guard..

Thank you to those who gave me the benefit of the doubt and helpful advice. My problem was resolved with a combination of squeezing both sides of the trigger guard and jiggling the key repeatedly. Both keys now work perfectly. I think I had just squeezed too tightly when I locked the trigger guard, and since it works just as well when not squeezed so hard, I won't do it again.
I realize that you're not a help line, which is why I searched all of your forums thoroughly using key words before asking my question. I got only a couple of hits, and they didn't address my problem or even apply to it, so I went ahead and posted a question that I suspected had an easy answer -- easier than walking into a locksmith's shop carrying a revolver anyway...
Just FYI -- when I first entered my original inquiry into an external search engine using the words "Master lock key P250", I got a couple of images of trigger guard/key combinations that looked exactly like mine -- that's what convinced me that I had the right keys, although I now understand that they're the same template as the keys that open some master padlocks (although not my Master padlocks). I was almost certain they were the right keys from the beginning because I keep track of my stuff, and found them where I expected to.
BTW -- your site was the first one listed after the images of the trigger guards, so I can understand that you get lots of questions like mine and that you get sick of them.
In my defense, I did say in my original post that keys would go all the way in, but would not turn,
"The keys both go all the way in, but they just will not turn."

So, thanks again for the advice, the benefit of the doubt when given, and the grace to apologize shown by mseifert.
All's well that ends well and please remember to be kind to newbies :)

I'm glad you were able to solve the problem. I originally came on this site posting a question and decided to stay, since. I have learned a ton and enjoyed correspondence with many. I hope your experience with this site will also continue to be rewarding.
