Questions on Deadbolts

Postby YouLuckyFox » 18 Aug 2014 22:27

I have a few questions about deadbolts that are beginning to pile up. First, what is this at the end of this Kwikset deadbolt? Is this a way of ensuring the dead-lock function?

What is the purpose of this apparent rod through the following deadbolt? I imagine it serves as resistance against forced entry? I have seen several variations on this feature. If there is any advanced information I should be knowledgeable of, please feel free to PM me or start-up an advanced thread of the same title in the Advanced Section

The first deadbolt is designed to be used on sliding doors. Sliding doors will use a latch that flips up and or down that will fit into a plate mortised into the wall. The latch grabs onto the plate so the door will not slide open. I believe that Kwikset is just a fancy version of this type of lock.

Check out the other "pocket locks" at the top of the page and you will probably recognize the mechanism and concept.

To my knowledge the rod through the bolt is hardened steel that is inserted in order to make it more difficult to cut the bolt with a saw type attack.

Thanks for your explanation, I apologize for my delayed gratitude. That makes sense on the sliding door, I'm surprised I was thrown off by its appearance!
