3d printed pinning tray.

Postby ggpaintballer » 10 Aug 2014 16:32

If any of you have 3d printers here's a basic tray I made. I'll change the design if anyone has input.

Shipping. If you have any cool info about locks or safes (training material etc) in digital form I'll take that too, but it isn't necessary. Pm me. Black, blue, clear (actually winds up being translucent), glow in the dark green or glow in the dark blue.

Light colors or even glow in the dark green would be nice for those times when you don't have great lighting.

Absolutely, I often wear a UV/Black-Light hat mount (http://www.opticsplanet.com/cyclops-ori ... -leds.html.) The UV lights actually "recharge" glow-in-the dark objects more than other light seems too. A glow-in-the-dark pinning tray would be awesome.

Glad that was helpful. The over-the-head strap versions are too much for me, usually. If you do make the purchase, make sure you get the kind with the clips underneath the part, as the clips on the over-the-top kind (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AM ... PDKIKX0DER) tend to snap over time. You've gotta see how UV lights "charge" a glow-in-the-dark object (just try it with the object in natural light, it'll still glow incredibly bright!)

The material is surprisingly bright in the dark, I'd guess it would be blazing under UV. I'm going to try and send a few out tomorrow. As the title states, this is a really simple tray.

Bosnisnbill (youtuber) has a design too.

I didn't really like his because it was in my mind unnecessarily thick. I do like that he filleted everything (rounded edges), I hadn't though of that. I always use tweezers to pin, but the fillet makes it easier to scoop with a finger. My pin slots aren't semi circles like his. Semi causes the pins to roll side to side in the bottom. Mine has arched sides to a small flat bottom to keep them there. I may fillet the top of my pinning slots in the future so if you lift the tray one way the pins will all stack in the bottom, but the other way you can slide it out with a finger.

This is a pretty nifty design, by the same guy again.

Lots of features. I just don't like the interior of the pinning slots again. Also with both it seems like it would be hard to pick up with the shear walls to a flat bottom, that's why my outside walls have a small curve.

I may eventually redesign mine with all the slots, for wafers and such, top of the slot curved, bottom flat, still arched slot walls to flat bottom. Curved outside walls to pick the tray up easily. I may convert the top right box into a plug holder, although I'm thinking mine would rise above the surface of the rest of the tray, rather than be cut into an overall thicker tray.

Received today! Here's an unnecessarily long video, with a black light and normal light to show the difference. I like to use a black light, as it doesn't have as much glare as the white light. The white light makes spots in my vision that ruin my ability to see small details like impressioning marks! Thanks GGPaintBaller!

Glad you like it. Some other people have pmed me. I'll be printing them next week. I'm moving and the printer is boxed. My next project will be a 3dprinted autodialer for safes, but that will take much longer to design. Stay tuned.

Glad you like it. That's abs so it's also acetone soluble. You can brush acetone on to smooth it. People in the 3d printing community will use acetone vapor (boils at around 130F) to smooth parts and make them look like the standard injection molding we're used to. I live in an apt right now so no acetone vapor baths for me...although probably will soon anyway. Flammable!!!

GGPaintBaller, in the past year there have been several threads related to 3D Printing. The threads generally populate into the second page within a week, so there is certainly a lot of discussion related to the process. Feel free to be as detailed as possible about the process and it's Pros, Cons, Limitations, etc. I would be eager to learn more. One question I have is about the honeycomb ribbing that apparently makes up the interior structure of the pinning block (see video.) Is this a feature that is standard for 3D printing, or is it a special feature for saving material? In other words, how much control do you have over the method of printing and the final detail of the model? Thank you in advance!
