Key not working in deadbolt after its been picked

Postby Btmnptr » 22 Aug 2014 16:40

Alright so i just got my first set of picks today and decided to try them out. I went to one of the deadbolts on my house and picked it a few times using raking and single pin picking methods. When i was done having my fun i went to test the key out to make sure all was still dandy.... Well it wasn't. the key inserts smoothly almost the entire way, except for the last pins worth of the key. Then it doesn't rotate at all all and is very very tough to remove from the bolt. I've ran my pick along all the pins and they all seem to be fine so I'm not totally sure what is causing this problem. I'm renting and olderish house with my buddies and the deadbolt seems to be pretty old as well. just thought id post on here before shooting some sort of lock lube in there.

i appreciate any feedback

Rule 1: Never pick a lock that isn't yours.
Rule 2: Never pick a lock in use.

Now that we have that out of the way -- you could try flushing the cylinder with electrical contact cleaner. Hold a bunched up paper towel at the base of the cylinder and spray heavily with the straw inserted partially into the keyway, catching the debris and liquid with the paper towel. I don't personally recommend WD-40 because you will have to keep using it, and you don't want to order Houdini or another lock lube, and have to wait several days for it to arrive. Most any hardware or automotive store will have contact cleaner.

When picked, did you turn the keyway 180 degrees? Maybe one of the driver pins got forced into the bottom of the keyway because there was no key in it.

Again, this is why you should never pick a lock in use. :(
