Illinois auto lockout business NEED HELP PLEASE

Postby Mikeyslock » 10 Sep 2014 5:42

Hello all,
I am new to this forum and am very excited to be a part of this community. Currently I am aspiring to be a locksmith but was curious if in the state of Illinois I would be able to perform auto lockouts WITHOUT being a locksmith currently and doing it on my own without working under a licensed locksmith? I appreciate all the help and thank you in advance!!

Thank you for your quick reply. Would you have any advice on how to go about getting licensed? And being able to do auto lock out work? Thank you again!!

as a side note, please don't use CAPS LOCK IN YOUR TITLES, we can read just fine without them, and trust me your post will be seen and noticed by many without putting it in CAPS LOCK. In case you were not aware, on the Internet, caps lock is the same as yelling at someone.

Thanks

If you type in "Illinois" in the search page, it comes up with a lot of helpful topics.

Sounds like a horrible place to try and be a Locksmith. Good luck to you.

by the time you invest in the schooling, tools, licensing, vehicle, gas, registration, maintenance, machinery, inventory and then advertising....you will be competing with hundreds of already licensed locksmiths who are trained and practising now.

If you intend to compete based on cost, I think you will find the barriers to entry mean that you will be required to increase your rates to close to similar pricing already on offer.

Just going and opening a vehicle is becoming less and less called for, when AAA and tow trucks pretty much cover the lower end of the pricing.

It is generally accepted that lockouts are not a viable source of continuing business. Most lockouts are emergency and if they are emergency then they should (by rights) expect to pay an emergency fee....which is often much higher than normal. Are you going to drop your tools on your current non-emergency job to go and do a lockout for the same non-emergency price? If you choose to do so....dont expect to be in business for very long.

Here in Arizona there is one company that exists by only doing lockouts. They have several new vehicles and they service all the larger cities
& even many of the smaller towns in my area and beyond. Their claim to fame is a $35 lockout service and they will unlock auto's or buildings.
I won't bother letting them know that You think they don't have a viable business as they seem to be doing quite well for themselves. In fact
last week I saw one of their trucks leaving a very rich area, at the same time I was entering. I don't know if they charged their regular $35
price in there, I know I was entering to unlock a new chevy pickup and I charged $85, and I even got a tip for making a free duplicate key,
Of course my free key will only unlock the door, but that is all it takes to get back in...

What if I was a road side assistance company, would I still need to be a locksmith to do auto lockouts? I want to do auto lockouts during my training as a locksmith and passing the exam. Is anyone here from Illinois who would be able to help with some advice? Thank you.
