what size tap/die and set screw for practice lock?

Postby Harris845 » 15 Sep 2014 7:57

I would like to make my own practice lock that i can change from 1-6 pins. What size tap/die and set screws should i be buying for this project? Where is a good place to get them? Are there any locks that i can just buy from a box store that is set up like this? Where do you get spool and thread pins?

Thank You

Depends on the lock, but the majority will use a 6/32 tap and corresponding setscrew. I like 6/32 x 1/8" for mine.

Great question. Google a Tap Drill Chart like the following: http://www.championscrew.com/form_tap_drill.htm
These will tell you what tap to use depending on the drill size / hole size you will be tapping for. Keep in mind that there are different %s to tap for. A 75% tap would be very hard to tap in and remove. You might want to go with a 60% tap. If you have any questions, let me know!

I would not go above 60% for this application, unless you are using some sort of controlled machining for your taps. If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

As another option, you could always get one premade, the most expensive (and elaborate) version is at: http://learnlockpicking.com/, but just look for repinable locks on ebay and you'll find a collection of them for cheap:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Practice-Lock-Y ... 1c44658e96
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SCHLAGE-EZ-RE-P ... 20ecb04432

That first one's also a cutaway! Not a bad deal...

Anyway, I found these three in about 30 seconds, so I'm sure if you look you can find cheaper ones.

Ok, so, apparently the Schlage cutaway locks like the ones I linked are absolutely horrible. Check the link: http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=15228
