Looks similar to a Squire padlock, but older

Looks like a 4 (maybe 5)lever key to me.
Maybe just my eyes. :)

Hmmm

The key works just fine and does not look to come from another lock. What makes you think that it is maybe the wrong key?

tks

I've seen a couple of old rim locks that have what looks like a really complex bitting but when I've stripped them to give them a clean and lube there's just been two levers. I actually even came across one that only had one! Maybe your key is the same sort of thing. I only really new to this and am probably wrong but my thoughts on the locks I saw was that it looks to the owner like a really secure lock because of the complex shape of the keys
Don't lose the keys this time!

the key looks like a cabinet lock pipe key - does the key have a hole in the end of the stem? And in the padlock keyway is there a pin for the key to go over? If the answer to each of those questions is different then not right key.

and it looks 4 lever key to me

Various Willenhall (UK) manufacturers produced padlocks of this sort although the illustrated dust cover arrangement is unusual. Usually there was a plain dust cover that slid upwards. My former employer used thousands of these padlocks for locking electrical substations, switches, gates etc but they have since been replaced as security needs increased. That padlock was a two lever padlock but the key looked like a 5 lever key with an extra cut that did nothing. The two levers were nearest the bolt presumably with packing to take up the balance of the space. For those not familiar with these padlocks, the key had to be used to lock them, they did not just click shut.

It also seemed that given a sample key, a different firm could sometimes produce a batch of keyed alike padlocks to the original key.
