I hate Illinois

I hate Illinois

Postby MSL » 29 Jul 2014 10:09

Well I'm screwed. I can't go into business for at least 8 months. The communist people's republic of Illinois has its next locksmith license exam in September. Today was the last day to register for it, so I went and tried to sign up. Not only does it cost nearly $200 just to take the test (not counting the actual license fee), but they want me to have a million bucks of insurance on the day I register for the exam. So I'd have to waste the cash for several months of liability insurance coverage before I can even take the test.

So since I'm broke and can't swing the cash for the policy, and probably couldn't get it with this short of notice anyway, I'm now stuck until next year.

Can anyone think of a good reason I need to have a million bucks worth of liability insurance in order to take a written exam?

It will never get better in IL. That 'cash cow' they created with toll booth funded interstate updates, will never die. They have paid for the road project numerous times, and the income keeps rolling in from it. Glad I don't have to live there. Wishing you well on the licensing 'cash cow' project they have.

You can take the exam through ALOA at a remote test site. The one in Hinsdale has the test every Thursday at 1:00 or so.

If you are a member of ALOA, you can take their CRL test and modules at a remote test site. Illinois uses the ALOA test and accepts results from it as well. The 3 modules (Core, Life Safety and Electric) are offered at these remote sites quite often, and save you the waiting for September (or next March!).

Oh man would that make stuff much more convenient. Why doesn't Illinois mention that anywhere on the regulation site? I could've been done with all this.

I hear ya friend... I had to do some serious digging to find it myself.

Not only does IL recognize the ALOA test, it uses the EXACT same test...as in the ALOA logo is on it's front page!

If you think Illinois is bad, try cutting some keys by code to Illinois locks. It's not just the state that's difficult

I get a number of calls from the Illinois side of the river, but refuse them all unless they are for my specialty products and services. It is the only way to avoid their licensing regime.

I traveled to take the ALOA test so that ILLINOIS would recognize me as a LOCKSMITH

Well worth it
