np :)

my very first lock was a brinks 472-42051 which is chock full of spools. this was my first lock simply because it was the only padlock i had laying around the house. next i bought a master no. 3 and a master no. 140. the 140 wasn't too difficult and took me about 10 mins to figure out, but the no. 3 was my arch nemesis and withstood my constant barrage for 3 days. i felt like a complete idiot. at the time i had a really hard time staying on the pins and relied solely on my notched lifter. it's not as deep as a medium hook but the profile is much thicker which is why i was having such a rough time. after forcing myself to use my medium hook and once i learned how to stay on the pin things where alot easier. although, i had to relearn how to pop the brinks because just the presence of the lifter in the lock, due to the profile, put the lock into a false set (the bitting's something like 1, 9, 2, 2) making it easier to pop and giving me false confidence in my ability which led to be getting really frustrated with the no. 3.

so yea, just because the lock is considered to be an "easy" lock doesn't mean that it won't fight you tooth and nail.

Good post buddy killer,
That made me feel much better. I've picked up a few cheap locks recently, a U haul padlock and a defiant (home depot cheapo) deadbolt. I've conquered both in a few minutes. I find them much easier than the pad locks. I also managed to get into my garage without the key in a few minutes...

For those of you that didn't read my introduction my garage is what sparked my interest in lock picking. I hired a lock smith to open it and after he performed the magic trick I paid him and ordered the tools.

Every lock, all easy so far, can still occasionally give me a hard time and I'm still not sure of the picking order on any. I'm going on feel and I think I know what I'm getting but I'm not always sure which pin I'm working. I thought a five pin lock would be harder but I find it much easier than any 4 pin padlock.

I've had some success with raking. Only on the defiant but it's pretty exciting.

The one thing I'm starting to question is my tension wrenches. I got the basic southard kit and I'm not loving any of them. They work horrible if I try to use them on the pin side and some locks they take up too much key way space no matter where I place them.

If any one has any tension wrench advice that's what I'm looking for now.

Thanks
hortstu

from what i've seen, all the tension wrenches in all the cheap sets blow. i'm just starting to experiment making my own out of the spring steel in windshield wiper blades. i really want to get a few peterson prybars. from what i've read the tension wrench is more important than the picks.

Don't pick locks that are in use!

I've heard very good things about peterson pry bars, but never used them...
