Mortise lock??

Postby kidneyorgans » 7 Nov 2014 21:30

What kind of lock/latch is this? It can be opened from inside, or if i use the key, I can permanently unlock it from outside.

I'll let our resident locksmiths tell you all about it, all I'll say is don't practice picking on your college's locks in case this is where this is question is going :D

Is that on a dorm room / suite or class room?

If your key turns 360 degrees to lock or unlock then it's a classroom function mortise deadlatch, I can't say who the manufacturer is, it isn't always
the same company as the one that made the mortise cylinder

One nice thing about this lock is it's self-latching and likely self-closing also thanks to a door closer

I agree from the description of how it works that it is a classroom function mortise lockset.

However, not all classroom function locksets require a 360 degree turn of the key to lock or unlock.

The lockset looks like it could be Corbin-Russwin or Sargent. The cylinder is Best SFIC and is not original to the lock, it is both a different metal finish than the lock (brushed chrome) and lacks matching patina.

Yes this is indeed a classroom door and yes, it does close on its own. I don't intend to pick it. Actually, I was wondering if I could bypass it. I have access to the other side as well. The problem I have is that the key is shared because we don't have enough for everybody and it's a real pain to coordinate with all the other assistants, especially since I am usually last to leave and first to come in. Thank you all for your responses!

Unfortunately, bypass discussion is reserved for trusted forum members who have been vetted and allowed into the Advanced areas where such conversation may take place. Otherwise, if it is posted in the public areas, there is the potential for someone who wants to break in somewhere to learn the ways and we do not want that to happen.

I'd ask facilities for another key or two, it should not be difficult for them to cut more, or have the professor put that request in on your behalf.

good luck!
