Alternatives or sources to Peterson Pro-1 Tubular Lock Pick?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Alternatives or sources to Peterson Pro-1 Tubular Lock Pick?

Postby foxyfox » 12 Nov 2014 10:02

Does anyone know of any sources or alternatives to the Peterson Pro-1 tubular pick? I'm looking for a tubular pick which allows a separate tension adjustment to each feeler. I have the Southard tool, and cannot for the life of me get the individual pin tensions to stay put.

I could only find the following sources, which were out of stock:

Peterson: no future ETA on re-stock. Production has paused indefinitely

lock-picks.com: product link forwards to lockpicks.com, and looks like they don't carry it in their catalog anymore (out of stock).

ebay: haven't seen anything
Try tightening the collar of the tool a little at a time.
You will find the sweet spot.

The Pro-1 is going through a complete re-design to bring down it's price.

Stock of the heads are also nearly exhausted and they won't be re-stocked. It's more than probable that the heads for the re-design will not fit the Pro-1, so any future addition to the range of heads (such as for Van Locks) will not be fit for a Pro-1. When the new one will be ready is a complete unknown (last talked to Ken about this in June).

The new heads will be some funky plastic, as well as the feelers. This will give the same strength as steel but a cheaper manufacture process.

I have the Pro-lok PKA2 tubular pick and I'm more than happy with it. You can impression as you would a Southord or SPP. Each feeler can be locked individually. It's a nice piece of kit.

Though I'm unsure of the brand, I found a combination 7pin/8pin tubular pick for sale for about $90 on http://enterthecore.net/equipment/

I don't know how effective or what quality the tool itself is, though I know the website is reliable, since I've ordered things from them before.

Hope that helps.

foxyfox if your southord pick is a couple years old it may just need a tune-up. I had the same trouble with my ilco tlp model b pick years ago. I got a cheap assortment of "o" rings from harbor freight, disassembled my pick and cleaned the slides and replaced the o rings. My pick started working again, just like new.

TOOOL and the Core Group used to stock Southern Specialties convertible 7/8pin tubular pick, I am not sure if they have changed suppliers or if the ascetics of the design have been changed.

Hi! I have some good news for you. I'm the lead technical draftsman at Peterson. We are currently in the process of re-designing the Pro-1. Many issues have been addressed, and we may also be introducing new tips for it which would enable the device to work with new types of tubular locks. I'm posting here because I heard there is a lot of demand for the Pro-1, and being part of the design process, I want to know if there's anything we haven't thought of that may improve the Pro-1's functionality. I also want to address a post I saw in this thread, about it becoming less expensive. This may not be the case. The CEO of Peterson says he isn't interested in lowering the cost of production or the price of the Pro-1, he's more interested in adding functionality. The reason that production was halted was because an earlier draftsman had done something bad (intentionally or not) to the blueprints which caused them to produce non-functional product, so we have had to go over the entire thing again and make it work. In the process, we've found things that need changing. Most of the work is done, so hopefully production will start very soon. Fingers crossed!

Great to hear that. I tried to put the Pro-1 in my cart when placing a decent sized order recently (Ken will remember me, I'm the one who forgot to add the discount code. D'oh!) and was disappointed that it was unavailable.
I'm afraid I haven't got any advice for functions to add (I'll leave that to the more skilled and knowledgeable forum users), but I just wanted to say that you have a guaranteed customer of at least 1 of these once they're available (If my other Petersons ever show up :P).
