Securing the entire Door, not just the lock

Thinking of upgrading your door security? Getting a better deadbolt or padlock? Getting a new frame or better hinges? Not sure what brand or model to go with for your particular application? Need a recommendation? Feel free to ask for advice here!

Securing the entire Door, not just the lock

Postby varocketry » 5 Dec 2014 22:46

I am in a medium term planning phase for a new vacation home. I'd like to know how a door and frame might be secured to offer optimal security in addition to a good lock/latch combination.

Any links to articles or videos that discuss securing a door or installing a door with higher security /strength in mind?

An hour or so of YOUTUBE and Google searching yesterday yielded several promising options for existing construction and new construction.

1. door and door frame overplay products to strengthen areas adjacent to lock holes and unreinforced soft wood door casements

2. security bars to strengthen kick-in/pushin attempts

Look into Door Jamb armor:

and always remove all the stock 3/4 inch brass screws from your strike plates and hinges and install 3 inch deck screws. Taking door frame trim off is also a good idea to see if there is an air or soft insulation gap between the door frame and the house, if there is, fill it with wood before installing the 3 inch screws, this gives them something to bite into and doesnt suck the frame apart making it bow out.
