Hi, Instead of downgrading the nice Schlage to a not as nice Kwikset, why not upgrade the front door Kwikset to a new Schlage? Bring the key from the Anderson door with you and the locksmith shop or home depot worker can key up the new front door Schlage deadbolt/knobset to match that key.
just a thought.. Squelchtone

thanks for the idea but when we renovated the house we put baldwin locks on all the doors with the same key and they weren't cheap, the backyard door didn't have a key when we bought the house and we didn't really care, but lately its a pita to have to go from the back around the house through the front door just to unlock the back door so i figured i could just replace the core to match the other kw1 keys

Yeah, try the 1539. It should work with a bit of hand filing.

thanks! yup i called andersen today( 2 locksmiths gave me that number) after 15 minutes of taking all my info and having me look for numbers on the glass the guy tells me "oh yea no we don't have kwikset, we only do schlage =| wow perfect that manual is exactly what i needed to find the part number, and i just ordered the 1539 it looks promising, maybe a bit of tinkering and it should fit, will post back with my results, thanks again!

Wow, never seen a lock like that...it's the format of an Assa scandinavian lock but takes a KIK.

my brother used to do warranty service work for andersen, jeldwin, etc for several years. he accumulated many boxes of locks and window hardware. i asked him if he still had the used locks and he 'thinks' he still has them 'somewhere' but hasn't seen them in a couple years. next time i'm in iowa i'll search for them in his cluttered shop. won't do you any good now but maybe if i locate them i'll be able to help someone down the road.

Too bad you bought the new, black&decker owned baldwin locks. They were changed over to a kwikset keyway to save a little money for corporate raises in the black & decker corp. The older, well known baldwin company used schlage for many many years, although I have seen the occasional baldwin marked mortise cyl with a kwikset keyway. I would make a franken cylinder using a kwikset keyway cylinder made by Ilco, that fits the spacing of schlage. You'd still need to cut a groove for a "c"clip and the tailpiece groove. One other possibility would be using the cylinder from a rim lock, many times these already are equipped with a c-clip and the tailpiece cut out you need.

Baldwin originally used Arrow keyway, then switched to Schlage before becoming a fancy Kwikset.

I think I have a Baldwin somewhere that uses a Segal-style keyway. Maybe it's AR1 with a different bow, I did not look that closely.

Squelchtone, thanks for your help, i read into the 1539 and gave it a shot.. fit perfect, identical dimensions to the old schlage, got it rekeyed and the locksmith goes "oh yea? i could have ordered that for you" .. then i politely asked why he told me he had nothing and no idea about what the core is.. facepalm, any who, a bit of filing on the tailpiece and some lube down the mechanism and this baby turns butter smooth

anytime guys! ordered a set of security drivers to load into the kwikset(know of any good places that sell these? got a set of 5 off eBay, could always use more) and of course i wanted to follow up with SPP of the old lock, took me 19mins(beginner picker) because i miscounted # of pins when i was feeling for them.. turns out there were 6 not 5.. i guess i bumped one with luck that set it free first time picking a 6 pin, scrambled up the pins and reset for more fun
