loose cylinder

Hi, when I put the key into the lock and turn clockwise or counter clockwise, its loose and doesn't catch on to the cylinder, hence door doesn't open. I had no problem before but this key I used was a copy and I will try the original key tomorrow. I have to pickup the original key and go back to the rental property with problem lock tomorrow. Do you think I need to replace the lock if cylinder's too loose? Or is it possible that the 'copy key' is the problem. Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

Without a picture of the lock in question or at least a description including a brand and model number, it is almost impossible to offer much assistance with your situation.

One thing is for sure though, if the key is turning the cylinder then the key is operating the way it is supposed to so it sounds like your duplicate is working fine but there is an issue with the lock itself.

Must have the picture to know what kind of lock you have. Knowing at least what country and area you are in often gives us a clue.

If it is a profile cylinder (more common European style) your duplicate key might be too short. The short tip of the blank will not push the activating bar into the cam. The cylinder may be turning with the bar, but not connected to the cam of the lock which actually opens the lock.

This is not necessarily true, if you consider that if this were a profile lock and the key was even a little bit too short, it would not contact the cam & it would simply
turn around and around. Really must see a pic of your lock to make any kind of a valid guess
