ABUS lock

Postby MustangGT » 30 Oct 2004 13:12

Hey all, im new to the site, ive read the MIT guide to picking and had some instruction from others. My mate gave me a lock to practice on, its a ABUS Padlock Serial N-55/40 and i just cannot get it to open even with all the pins set. Can anyone give me any advice how to get to work on it?

Thanks in advance.

Okay, coupl'a things.

Since this is your first lockpicking attempt, how do you know the pins are set? Are they sticking to the top and not dropping back? This is called binding and it generally means your being to forceful with the tension wrench.

I would wager that the lock in question has spool pins. It makes the pins stick at the shear line and it feel picked, but it ain't. Generally the advice for this is "use less tension," but since you are new, I say get a new lock. Use the search feature to find out about spool and mushroom pins, and I believe the MIT guide goes into it a bit. Good luck and remember to be patient learning to do this, it does take some time to get good at it.

All I can say is that if u r new to lockpicking then dont try to pick that Abus  .. Find/buy some cheap locks, practice on them and read the MIT guide again (yes 1 time is not enough)..

I would have to agree that the ABUS has spool pins. A good lock to learn on is a Master padlock. My first lock I picked was a Master padlock #1 and it only has 4 regular pins, so I was able to pick it in about 30 seconds. Happy picking!

Thanks for the advice guys, ive read the MIT guide a few times, but i know when reading something like that you cant ever read it too many times. I'm a magician by profession so im used to hours of practice fine tuning a skill hehe.
I assumed the pins were set because they were all staying up, as soon as i lower the pressure with my tension tool all the pins pop back at the same time.

Are ABUS's quite hard to pick then? I'll go out get some cheaper locks today :D

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated.

If you can SEE the pins all the way up that means your key pin is too high. It talks about this in the MIT guide to lock picking. If this happens just release a little tension and they should come back down. I recommend searching this site for videos on the art. Visual learning really helps when learning to pick locks, but the best learning comes from practicing. I suggest you buy a kwickset deadbolt and take it apart to see how it works so you can get a thorough understanding on locks. Also you can take all the pins out but one, then pick that pin so you get a feel for what it is like when a pin sets. Finally, you can work your way up to five pins and then move on to harder locks. Good-luck.
Lock picking is an art, not a means of entry.

If you are new to lock picking then the Abus is not the best lock to start on as they have spool pins which are an art of their own to master. You need to find a lock you can pick easily and practice on it until you can open it without thinking. You will also need to research about spool pins and how they work and the methods used to pick them, you sould then be able to pick the Abus padlok with some practice.

YEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAA!!!

I just picked my first lock. Its an ABUS N55/50 padlock. I sprayed the inside with wd40 (lubricant) made a torque wrench out of an allen key and made a pick out of an allen key. It might have been a fluke so im going to try again.
