Abus Titalium 80/50 Gutted

Postby dicey » 15 Jul 2013 17:56

Long time ago bill brought along a gutted Abus Titalium 80/50 for me. I wanted to have it in pieces in order to take a closer look at it etc. In my opinion the security pins are not of the best quality what do you think?

Very clearly presented, Dicey. Like the video quite a bit.

Was it just the lighting, or did those plugs on the side look pretty obvious. It seems to be an alright lock, better than a lot of the junk out there. But the lack of ball bearing locking mechanism seems a real vulnerability that would not have been expensive to change. It might even be cheaper, as there are fewer parts that would require machining for manufacture.

Thank you for the post!

Gordon

Great video, I love watching your videos. May I ask what camera you are using? That macro was superb! Could the serrations and milling on the security pins be shallow due to the chrome plating?

Hey Gordon,

The lock is good quality indeed. But it is not like it used to be your know... You can feel and see that it is made in China. No offense some things from China may be good but the most of them are not. First the incomplete plating on the Abus Rock and now security pins that lack in tolerances if you ask me. The padlock is Aluminum after all and ball bearing or not you can probably break it easily either way. I am not saying they are bad but I do not think they are good either. I can get a nice brass Burg Wächter padlock that is still made here for the same price so why buy China stuff? I am just a bit disappointed you know...

Hey Fox,

I am using a Leica D-Lux5 and I am VERY happy with it! The camera did cost me around 500€ but the money is well invested. I wanted to have something mid size that I can take with me. No lens changing and stuff like that... I would love to have a Nikon but can not afford it yet. I was talking to a good friend of mine ones who is a professional photographer and was telling him about my idea to buy the D-Lux5. He checked the specs for me and I told him I want to photograph safes where there are bad light conditions and he just said "Go for it!" I even found a button for a makro film modus just now so the camera will probably be focusing faster in the future :D
I do my videos in the attic and there is a window above me so that the light does not come from several directions.

My friend does music photography you may take a look if you want:

Very cool site, thanks for sharing :D glad I asked about the camera. My camera does me well for me now, but man 10.1 Megapixels! I have a bit of envy for that!

I just read this post you put up and wrote about my experience of getting an Abus lock off eBay that is the same as you are talking about.

Definitely agree with your opinion on the Chinese Abus locks.

Hi

I able to buy 3 of them think they are 64ti model one long shackle and two standard for €10. The only thing that worries me is the packaging as it looks different from one I can see on Amazon or eBay. If it possible to be a cheap chinese copy? If not I think it's a bargain
